Behavioral Specialist
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1. Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited educational institution.
2.
Hold or be eligible for certification by the State of Florida in at least one area in Exceptional Education and/or School Psychology.
3. Certified Behavior Analyst or currently pursuing educational coursework to fulfill certification requirements.4. Successful experience as a behavioral specialist and/or school psychologist preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Detailed knowledge of evaluation procedures, policies, laws, and regulations related to the student staffing process for Exceptional Student Education.
Ability to conduct comprehensive psycho-educational evaluations of students. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to organize and prioritize. Ability to interact effectively with parents and school personnel. Detailed knowledge of policies, laws, and regulations related to behavior analysis.REPORTS TO

JOB GOAL
To assist the Executive Director of Exceptional Student Education and Student Services in conducting eligibility and placement staffings, to provide technical assistance to schools regarding Federal, State, and District guidelines and procedures and assess, develop, train, and monitor behavior plans that bring about behavioral and/or academic change.
PLANNING / PREPARATION
*(01) Establish long and short-range plans designed specifically to support the District Exceptional Student Education Plan.
*(02) Establish priorities and schedules for services and programs.
*(03) Participate in planning and developing programs and/or services to students.
*(04) Assist in preparing for changing curriculum and service needs.
*(05) Coordinate the provision of special services to exceptional student education students.
*(06) Design and train for specific behavior programming with individual students and/or classes.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
*(07) Prepare and maintain thorough and accurate records.
*(08) Review and approve IEPs, ESE referral packets, and staffing folders to assure completeness and accuracy.
*(09) Demonstrate organizational skills.
*(10) Manage time effectively.
*(11) Assist in enforcement of school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policy.
*(12) Prepare behavior interventions (charts, graphs) to be used for managing excessive behaviors.
ASSESSMENT MANAGEMENT
*(13) Assure that parents have been appropriately informed of recommended assignments and their due process rights.
*(14) Assist in reviewing recommendations of evaluation specialists determining students' eligibility for special programs.
*(15) Exercise confidentiality in sharing of student data.
*(16) Participate in evaluation of the effectiveness of programs and services.
*(17) Assist with the educational assessment of students with learning problems.
*(18) Recognize overt indicators of student distress or abuse and take appropriate intervention, referral or reporting actions.
INTERVENTION / DIRECT SERVICES
*(19) Serve as designee for the Director in Individual Education Plan conferences, eligibility, and placement staffings, and reassignments or dismissal staffings.
*(20) Provide technical assistance to teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators on ESE procedures, programs and services, including information and interpretation of the State, Federal and District guidelines, rules and laws.
*(21) Assist in recommending intervention strategies for ESE students upon request.
*(22) Assist teachers in the development/revisions/implementation of individual education plans and behavior plans for exceptional students.
*(23) Assist ESE teachers with curriculum, methods and techniques, and selection of appropriate materials and equipment.
TECHNOLOGY
*(24) Use technology to enhance student learning.
*(25) Use technology to gather and share information with parents, teachers and students.
*(26) Access technology in order to conduct Functional Behavioral Assessments.
*(27) Use technology for direct student assessment.
*(28) Use technology to review student assessment data.
*(29) Use technology for administrative tasks.
*(30) Use appropriate technology in delivery of behavioral services.
COLLABORATION
*(31) Confer with principals, teachers, counselors, and school specialists about ways to facilitate the learning and adjustment of children eligible for ESE programs.
*(32) Use effective consultative behaviors.
*(33) Interpret educational policies, programs, and procedures related to Exceptional Student Education.
*(34) Collaborate with peers to create a quality instructional environment.
STAFF DEVELOPMENT
*(35) Provide information and/or in-service to teachers, administrators, and other school staff.
*(36) Engage in continuing improvement of professional knowledge and skills.
*(37) Conduct a personal assessment periodically to determine professional development needs.
*(38) Participate in district sponsored staff development programs.
*(39) Manage within an organizational context a personal professional development program by setting specific goals and timetables.
PARENTAL INPUT
*(40) Assure that parents have been appropriately informed of recommended student assignments and their due process rights.
*(41) Explain eligibility criteria and implications, academic and behavioral, to parents and school personnel.
*(42) Help ensure parent understanding of decisions, procedures, and meetings affecting their children.
*(43) Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with other professionals, students, parents, and community agencies.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
*(44) Act in a professional and ethical manner and adhere to the Code of Ethics and Principles of Professional Conduct of the Education Profession at all times.
*(45) Perform and fulfill professional responsibilities.
*(46) Support school improvement activities, services, and programs through active participation.
*(47) Contribute to the overall school mission by supporting various school committees and services such as PTO, School Advisory Committee, textbook selection, curriculum development, student activities, and accreditation.
*(48) Share experience and new learning by mentoring new colleagues.
*(49) Uphold the best interest of students, staff, and community in support of the District's Mission Statement.
*(50) Perform other incidental tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
INTERIM STUDENT GROWTH
*(51) Ensure that student growth and achievement is continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area and/or student program classification. (Student growth must be measured by State assessments required under s F.S. and by local assessments for subjects and grade levels not measured by the State assessment program.)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Light Work:
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
