    Description

    Intern II - Scientific Illustrator

    The Scientific Illustration Intern for the Keller Science Action Center will use artwork to increase pollinator literacy and promote native plants. This internship will be hybrid, between 3-4 months long ideally beginning August 2024, 21-28 hrs/week. The Intern will be supervised by the Chicago Region Sr. Program Manager and co-mentored by the Field Museum's Artist-in-Residence and Conservation Ecologist.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Produce scientific illustrations of Chicago region native plants that have important relationships with native pollinators
    • Create additional piece(s) for engaging a popular audience. Possible options include pollinators in their habitat pieces, graphic novel, comic book, poster, etc.
    • Work closely with scientists to ensure accuracy and quality of illustrations
    • As a culminating experience, exhibit illustrations created during this internship at a public conservation-themed event, such as the Chicago Wilderness Alliance Congress in November
    • Participate in occasional habitat restoration or planting days in the City of Chicago and in the far south suburbs of Chicago to learn more about local ecology and pollinators

    Experience and Qualifications

    • Currently pursuing or recently graduated with a degree in scientific illustration, fine arts, graphic design, or similar or equivalent experience
    • Ability to portray subjects in a scientific manner in one or more mediums
    • Experience creating artwork from life and from photo references
    • Ability to work independently and be self motivated
    • Ability to work in a hybrid in-person and virtual work environment
    • Strong time and project management skills
    • Interest in ecology, conservation, and science communication
    • Ability to research subjects of the illustrations
    • Passion to develop skills in scientific illustration
    • Commitment to continued learning in justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion competencies
    • Your application must include a portfolio of 5-10 illustration samples that demonstrate skill and experience in illustration of natural subjects. Please upload one pdf of all samples.

    Salary of $17- $20 per hour depending on experience; 21-28 hours per week for 12 weeks.
