    Fleet Maintenance Supervisor


    JOB SUMMARY
    This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the maintenance and repair of city vehicles and equipment.


    MAJOR DUTIES

    • Maintains and orders inventory of parts, fluids, filters, bulbs, and tires; researches and locates parts, including hard to find items.
    • Enters information from Mechanics into database.
    • Prioritizes and delegates daily work assignments to department personnel.
    • Assists in maintaining shop and shop equipment.
    • Assists Mechanics with more complex repair and maintenance needs.
    • Makes technical repairs, including welding and fabricating parts.
    • Evaluates equipment and makes preparation for its disposal.
    • Inspects new vehicles and equipment to ensure compliance with specifications.
    • Attends meetings with manager and department directors to discuss vehicle and equipment replacement issues.
    • Makes service calls and performs field repairs as needed.
    • Installs vehicle accessories, including GPS units, decals, lights, etc.
    • Reviews the work of Mechanics to ensure quality assurance.
    • Performs related duties.

    KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

    • Knowledge of departmental and city policies and procedures, including safety rules and regulations.
    • Knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair procedures.
    • Knowledge of mechanical diagnostic procedures.
    • Knowledge of the diagnosis and repair of mechanical, HVAC, hydraulic, electrical and brake systems.
    • Knowledge of inventory management principles.
    • Skill in the supervision of personnel.
    • Skill in the repair and maintenance of a variety of vehicles and motorized equipment.
    • Skill in welding and fabrication.
    • Skill in the use of assigned tools and equipment.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.

    SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
    The Fleet Manager assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.


    GUIDELINES
    Guidelines include city and department rules and regulations and vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair manuals. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

    COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK


    • The work consists of varied supervisory, administrative, and equipment maintenance duties. The variety of equipment to be maintained contributes to the complexity of the position.
    • The purpose of this position is to supervise the maintenance of city vehicles and equipment. Successful performance helps ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of city operations.

    CONTACTS

    • Contacts are typically with department personnel, other city employees, vendors, dealers, and the general public.
    • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, motivate persons, and resolve problems.
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT


    • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
    • The work is typically performed in an office, a shop, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, or vests.

    SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
    This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel within an area, department, or unit. Direct supervision typically involves the ability to manage schedules, performance, and the interpersonal issues of other employees. It may involve the ability to recommend changes to work priorities or strategies within an area, department, or unit.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Associates degree required; and
    • More than five years of related experience required; or
    • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
    • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
    • Possession of or ability to readily obtain appropriate certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
    • Must successfully pass criminal background and Motor Vehicle checks.
    • Must successfully pass post-offer DOT drug screening and physical.
