    Orthopedic Equipment Tech I -

    The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems.

    The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state.

    The Orthopedic Equipment Tech I performs work involved in assisting in the design, fabrication and repair of seating systems and other adaptive equipment to promote function, comfort, and to reduce the risk of medically related problems.

    The Orthopedic Equipment Tech I works under minimal supervision (i.e. assignments are specified, but the worker has considerable freedom within an established framework to choose procedures, timing, and methods, including the use of tools and equipment). The Orthopedic Equipment Technician II is the primary supervisor. The Orthopedic Equipment Technician I is not a supervisory position. Completion of work requires occasionally originating new methods and/or techniques. Decisions are varied but based on broad principles and guidelines. The Orthopedic Equipment Tech I has no financial responsibility but is accountable for assigned property.

    Essential Job Functions:

    Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

    Design, fabricate, modify, repair and maintain seating systems and adaptive equipment to promote function and comfort, and to reduce the risk of medically related problems while maintaining reasonable balance between quality and quantity of work to ensure products are acceptable in appearance and function while completing products within a reasonable amount of time.

    2. Assist HT Therapist in the evaluation for design and/or modifications of wheelchairs or other adaptive equipment.
    3. Complete and turn in paperwork to ensure accurate and up to date workload measures.

    Maintains work area and inventory in efficient and safe condition to assure safe and effective use of facilities by providing preventative maintenance.

    Maintain reasonable balance between quality and quantity of work/repairs by:
    (a.) Initiating work orders for repairs as needed; (b.) Following all safety rules in storage of materials, use of equipment and general shop work; and (c.) Assisting in keeping a running inventory of tools, materials and other equipment in the shop.

    Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.

    Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

    Knowledge Skills Abilities:
    Ability to design, with assistance, and fabricate seating systems and other adaptive equipment for individual needs.

    Knowledge of and ability to safely operate equipment such as band saw, table saw, cut-off saw, table and hand grinder, cutting torch, and wire feed welder.

    Knowledge and skill to safely use manual and power hand tools.
    Ability to read and understand material safety data sheets. Ability to appropriately communicate/interact with supervisors, peers, and individuals.
    Ability to exhibit mature judgement and emotional stability. Ability to plan, organize and execute work under conditions of emotional stress and physical stamina. Ability to keep records for reports. Ability to work in an environment with minimal supervision. Ability to lift at least 75 pounds. Knowledge of Safe Use of Restraint (SUR) with the ability to appropriately apply this knowledge in necessary situations. Strength and flexibility to safely administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Knowledge of the manufacture and maintenance of customized adaptive equipment, orthopedic devices and modified wheelchairs. Proven ability to plan and execute work efficiently, maintain accurate records and communicate effectively. Knowledge of electrical motors and wiring. Physical stamina to transfer individuals weighing - pounds (2-person lift) to and from customized wheelchairs. Physical stamina to load wheelchairs, adaptive equipment, supplies and materials.
