    Job Summary

    Major Duties

    Leads NA-8 cooks in preparing all types of meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables, fruits, sauces, and gravies for menus. Prepares, cooks, seasons, and portions food for all meals following standardized recipes at different levels of difficulty, makes modifications to recipes for ingredient quantities, number of servings, and size of the equipment available; plans, regulates, and schedules cooking procedures so numerous completed food products are ready at the same time. Prepares and presents food in a visually appealing manner. Prepares menu items using special or difficult recipes requiring numerous interrelated steps, many ingredients, and lengthy preparation time. Prepares a variety of menu items using several different and complex methods of preparation. Tests and evaluates new food products. May coordinate the work of lower graded employees engages in a variety of standard cooking operations.

    Relays instructions from supervisor. Gets work started. Sets work pace. Demonstrates work methods, and provides work-related guidance. Ensures worksite materials and tools are available to complete work. Reports workplace injuries immediately to the immediate or higher level supervisor, and to the Human Resources office in the absence of the immediate supervisor. Checks with supervisor on problems. Checks on work and meets productivity goals. Ensures employees follow security, safety and housekeeping rules. Conducts on-the-job training and instructions. Performs supervisory duties in an emergency, or short-term and nonrecurring basis.

    Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

    Qualifications

    SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Thorough knowledge of the full range of food preparation principles, including the techniques and procedures necessary to develop new or recurrent recipes. Knowledge of procedures related to cooking in large quantities. Ability to expand and modify recipes and to develop standardized recipes for quantity cooking. Ability to lead, organize and coordinate work of lower graded employees.

    RESPONSIBILITY: Works under direction of supervisor who establishes daily work assignments and who provides general instructions either orally or in writing. Incumbent is responsible for analyzing and correcting production problems independently, and coordinating the cooking process for food items assigned directly to them. Work is subject to spot checks by supervisor for conformance with quality food standards, timeliness, and adherence to established operating procedures.

    PHYSICAL EFFORT: Lifts and carries objects up to 45 lbs independently and objects over 45 lbs with assistance.

    WORKING CONDITIONS: Kitchens are often uncomfortably warm and noisy. Incumbents are exposed to steam, fumes, and odors; danger of falling on freshly mopped floors; burns from steam or hot foods; and cuts from knives and electrical machines.

    STEP 3 ¿ Military Spousal Preference may be requested for positions NF-3 and below, Crafts and Trades (NA, NL, NS), and Child & Youth (CY) positions. Spouses must meet the minimum qualifications posted in the job announcement. Spouse preference eligibility begins 30 days before the military sponsor¿s reporting date to the new duty location. Spousal Preference applicants hired in a flexible position will not lose their spousal preference eligibility until converted or hired into a regular full-time or part-time position or is within a 60 day period of receiving new PCS Orders. Military spouses shall receive MSP for each PCS move until such time as they accept or decline a continuing position.

  • Furnish a copy of the PCS order identifying a spouse¿s authorized move and the sponsor¿s reporting date to the new duty location. If the spouse is not listed on the PCS orders, the spouse must provide documentation (i.e. marriage certificate, valid military ID, etc.) verifying marriage prior to PCS orders (must have been married to the military sponsor before relocation to the new duty station).

    Transition Assistance Program : (May be requested for positions graded NF-3 below or equivalent) Involuntarily separated members of the armed forces and eligible family members applying through the Transition Assistance Program must upload all documents listed above in Step 4.
