    Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Orchestral and Instrumental Studies

    Job Description:
    The Binghamton University (State University of New York) Department of Music invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Orchestral and Instrumental Studies position. This tenure-track position is part of a multi-year cluster hire within Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, "Arts Practice, Performance, and Research in the 21st Century." This program aims to establish a network of artists and scholars who see their mission as foundational to an intellectually rigorous liberal arts education and who take an expansive approach to their creative activities, research programs, and pedagogy. It forms part of an initiative to establish a school of the arts within Harpur College. For further information, see:

    The Department offers the Bachelor of Music degree in performance, the Bachelor of Arts (in performance, composition, or musicology), and the Master of Music degree with concentrations in conducting, opera/voice, composition, instrumental performance, music history and literature, and collaborative piano.

    Essential Duties, Tasks, and Responsibilities

    Serve as conductor of the University Orchestra
    Oversee the continuing development of the instrumental program within the Department of Music
    Facilitate chamber music ensemble experiences
    Facilitate individual studio and area (i.e., string, woodwind, brass) events
    Oversee the instrument inventory
    Collaborate with other areas within the Department of Music and the School of the Arts
    Maintain an active profile in conducting (e.g., creative activities, research) that engages the discipline at national and international levels
    Teach and advise graduate students in conducting, and supervise graduate students in instrumental performance
    Teach the introductory conducting course for music majors
    Engage actively in on-campus and off-campus recruiting
    Build and maintain relationships with regional public school music programs
    Additional areas of teaching may be determined depending on departmental needs and the candidate's specific interests, expertise, and qualifications.

    Requirements:
    Required Qualifications:

    Masters or Doctoral degree in Instrumental/Orchestral Conducting
    Experience conducting orchestras at the university level
    Performance record of a broad repertoire (full orchestra, new music, opera, chamber ensembles, solo concerti and arias, musical theater, works for choir and orchestra) from a range of musical eras
    A demonstrated commitment to performing work outside the standard repertoire, including new music and music by underrepresented composers
    Preferred Qualifications:

    Doctoral degree in Instrumental/Orchestral Conducting
    Experience teaching academic music courses (e.g., orchestration) as instructor of record
    Experience supervising graduate students in Orchestral Conducting
    Experience in building and maintaining an orchestral program in a high-performing liberal arts university setting
    Entrepreneurial experience in ensemble and audience development
    Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration across the arts and humanities
