- Executes and manages research projects investigating cancer in a foundational (basic) biological/health science research laboratory;
- Collaborates with principal investigator (PI) to develop and implement goals and objectives of studies;
- Conceptualizes, designs, and executes complex laboratory experiments; plans and executes advanced molecular and cellular techniques; plans, coordinates and oversees processing and analysis of data; analyzes and interprets research data; develops and implements new and/or revised research methodology and techniques; plans and tests experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical methods;
- Develops and establishes research controls, criteria and standards; performs critical analysis of literature relevant to research;
- Collaborates with principal investigator to write and prepare research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at national and conferences and workshops, and in the writing of project reports, articles and other documents;
- Attends and presents research results at national and international scientific conferences, workshops and seminars;
- Assists with development, writing and preparation of grant proposals to obtain new or renewal of extramural funding in support of research;
- Investigates, identifies and recommends possible sources of research funding;
- Participates in developing and managing grant budgets; monitors expenses;
- Monitors and enforces laboratory safety procedures to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, as well as local, state and federal regulations, including proper disposal and maintenance of regulated materials;
- Trains and/or supervises research staff; provides technical assistance of lab operations;

Description
The Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Lab Specialist Intermediate to perform the experiments outlined in the research program of Drs. Tsung and Zhang. The Tsung-Zhang lab has extensive experience in biochemistry and molecular biology research, and its overarching research direction revolves around the understanding of the role of the tumor microenvironment in various oncologic disease processes, and providing novel strategy for prevention and cure, especially the role of hepatic immune responses after pre-operative exercise therapy. Other research interests include innate immune and inflammatory responses in liver sterile injury, and innate immunity in development of hepatocellular carcinoma.
Lab Specialist Intermediate employees engage in laboratory research by performing complex lab and research related tasks. They are distinguished from Lab Specialist employees by their additional responsibilities related to developing, designing, and conducting increasingly complex research projects. They perform complex tasks independently. They have the authority to adapt methods and procedures to meet the needs of research. They may supervise support personnel and manage budgets.

Minimum qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
