    The Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia and UVA Health Children's Hospital seek qualified, visionary applicants with proven clinical, leadership, administrative, and program development skills to become the next Division Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief for UVA Health Children's Hospital.

    This position will be filled at the Associate or full Professor level. Rank will be dependent upon qualifications.


    The incoming Chief will be responsible for partnering with the Chair of the Department Surgery to promote a collegial work environment in the Pediatric Surgery Division that enhances clinical growth and academic development while advancing research activities consistent with the growth of clinical programs.

    The selected candidate, as Surgeon-in-Chief, will also serve alongside the Physician-in-Chief on the Executive Leadership Team of UVA Health Children's Hospital to develop and implement impactful destination programs, enhance quality metrics, foster positive referral relationships, and facilitate the execution of UVA Health's Strategic Plan in the pediatric surgery domain.

    The successful candidate will expand the Pediatric Surgery Division to foster differentiation and concentration of expertise around subspecialty areas of pediatric surgery and will bring together all surgical departments and effectively coordinate pediatric surgical care.


    The ideal candidate must demonstrate clinical and academic leadership of teams of surgeons, supporting pediatric specialists, and investigators; must be growth-minded, innovative, and quality-driven; and must have the communication and interpersonal skills to work well within a highly collaborative and integrated health system.

    Goals include guiding all pediatric surgical services to enhance relevant accreditations and verifications, including providing leadership as UVA Children's establishes American College of Surgeons Pediatric Surgery Center verification and seeks certification as a Pediatric Trauma Center.

    The successful candidate will also provide pediatric surgical leadership and liaison roles as UVA Health Children's Hospital further develops its successful pediatric solid organ transplant programs.

    For the third consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report has named UVA Health Children's the number one children's hospital in Virginia.

    The publication's "Best Children's Hospitals" guide rank nine of UVA Health Children's 10 specialties among the top 50 of all children's hospitals nationally.

    The University of Virginia Children's Hospital is a "Hospital within a hospital" and has a 54 bed Level III NICU, 21 bed PICU, an intermediate care unit of up to 6 beds, and 38 acute care beds with expansion of the PICU and NICU anticipated in the near future.

    A large outpatient clinic focused entirely on the pediatric population and an outpatient surgery building exist on grounds of UVA Health Medical Center.


    • Six or more years of clinical, academic, and leadership experience in Pediatric Surgery
    • Completion of an ACGME-accredited general surgery residency and pediatric surgery fellowship
    • Have an MD and board certification in Pediatric Surgery
    • Strong track record of clinical operations and academic leadership
    • Demonstrated leadership skills in building innovative programs as well as recruiting and retaining faculty
    • Commitment to recruiting, developing and retaining women, underserved minorities and those with disability status
    • A nationally recognized reputation in Pediatric Surgery
    • Qualified for academic appointment at the rank of associate or full professor
