Fellowship training in the sub-specialty of pediatric orthopaedic surgery is required with a special interest and demonstrable training in hip preservation as well as evidence of academic productivity. The Pediatric Orthopaedic Division currently has two surgeons, one non-operative orthopaedist, and one physician assistant to manage the patient population.

The Orthopaedic Adult Reconstruction Division currently has four surgeons. The Orthopaedic Sports Medicine division currently has two hip arthroscopy specialists.

The goal of this position is to build a hip preservation practice to span children to adulthood with expertise in managing early and middle age hip pathology including newborns with developmental hip dysplasia, children with hip pathology including residual developmental hip dysplasia, Perthes, slipped capital femoral epiphysis among others.

The candidate would work with the hip arthroscopists to build a robust hip preservation practice for teenagers and young adults with hip pathology and then interfacing with the adult reconstruction division for patients undergoing hip replacement surgery.

Training and exposure in the broad range of surgical techniques is preferable, particularly open hip preservation surgery including periacetabular osteotomy and surgical hip dislocation.

The selected candidate will join a group of orthopaedic faculty who share emergency orthopaedic call coverage at a Level 1 quaternary care trauma center.

They will also join the call pools for care of pediatric orthopedic patients.

The candidate will see patients in our newly constructed UVA Orthopaedic Center Ivy Road, a 200,000 square foot facility housing all adult orthopaedic subspecialties, physical therapy, outpatient operating rooms, conference space, and prosthetics and orthotics.

The candidate will also have clinic space in the Battle Building, our pediatric specialty clinic, housing all pediatric specialties for those patients with complex care needs.

The candidate will perform surgery in both the in-patient and the out-patient areas of the UVA Health System.

The model of children's care at the University of Virginia positions a candidate perfectly to care for patients with hip pathology across the age spectrum as the Children's hospital is nested within the larger UVA facility at the operating room, inpatient, and outpatient care areas.
