    Research Program Assistant


    The goals of the behavioral and mental health prevention projects are to co-design and/or implement culturally relevant interventions and evaluate the impact on improving health and sometimes educational outcomes for Native American children, families, and communities.

    The over-arching goal is to develop successful data-driven and culturally-informed surveillance and intervention programs for Tribal and other communities in which behavior threatens the well-being of children and their families and limits their opportunities to flourish and lead healthy lives.


    We are seeking a Research Program Assistant who will serve as a facilitator of a behavioral health curriculum focused on increasing economic stability of Native fathers and their families, reduce violence in rural Native communities, and increase healthy relationships and co-parenting in Native communities.

    Position activities include facilitation of the Azhe' Bidziil (Strong Father) program to Native fathers (or father figures such as grandfathers, uncles, etc.) who are age18 years and older, have at least one child < 24 years old, and live in or near Tuba City and Chinle, Arizona.

    Weekly lessons are delivered for approximately 12 weeks to groups of 8-12 Native fathers in central community locations. This position will also include all logistics related to program delivery and case management of participants.
    This position serves as a full-time Research Program Assistant for Behavioral Health research projects.

    Specific Duties & Responsibilities


    • Serve as a facilitator of a strengths-based health promotion curriculum.
    • Complete training and prove proficient in the curriculum. Complete booster trainings as necessary.
    • Deliver the 12-session curriculum to groups of 8-12 Native fathers (or father figures) across 3 months in central community locations.
    • Complete sessions summary forms online via a data entry software and update program tracking logs.
    • Assist with data entry as needed.
    • Provide referrals for youth and families to outside services and entities as necessary.
    • Provide comprehensive case management (at least 8 visits) to participants. Case management includes meeting one-on-one with participants (via phone or in person) to provide referrals and check in on goal progress.
    • Work closely with the Program Coordinator to ensure the curriculum is delivered with fidelity and quality.
    • Work with the rest of project team on duties related to recruitment and consenting and participate in staff meetings to review project goals and progress.
    • Represent the project in a community setting to initiate and maintain interest in the project.
    • Attend and (co-)facilitate Community Advisory Board meetings as necessary.
    • Assist with dissemination of project findings in annual reports, at national conferences and in the scientific literature.
    • Assist with other Center-wide programmatic duties as needed.

    Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


    • Must be comfortable completing invasive procedures including specimen collection (nasal, saliva, urine, blood) and other samples from participants; proficiency in the use of computers, including software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing, excellent organizational and time management skills, independent and self-motivated, highly organized and detail oriented; ability to manage multiple and competing priorities, excellent oral and written communication skills, demonstrated strong, positive interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively across disciplines and within a variety of cultures.
    • Current driver's license issued by the state of residence and good driving record required.
    • Ability to travel with overnight stays required as needed. Some evening, weekend and holiday work may be required.
    • May be required to work at other sites. Guidelines regarding travel time and project vehicle use will be clarified based on specific site needs.
    • This position will maintain background clearance as required by the employer and any collaborating agencies.
    Minimum Qualifications


    • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent, with some college courses preferred.
    • Some related experience.
    • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
    Preferred Qualifications


    • Dine Bizaad speaker.
    • Knowledge of community geography, culture and traditions.
    • Consenting processes and evaluation experience.
    • General knowledge of research.
