    Prepares technically and economically viable designs for extensions and modifications to the electric utility distribution system for Bryan Texas Utilities (BTU).

    Performs power line assessment activities and engineering field operations required to support the construction, inspection, maintenance, and accounting of overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities.

    Essential Job Functions


    • Makes initial contact with customers to understand electrical service requirements and evaluate existing electrical distribution facilities.
    • Prepares designs for distribution overhead and underground electric utility line extensions and modifications to the electrical system that include detailed structural and electrical calculations as appropriate.
    • Creates detailed plans, cost estimates, construction drawings, staking sheets, topographic profiles, work order layouts, maps, and related drawings used in the planning, design, maintenance, and construction of electric facilities; utilizes PC and software applications to prepare and maintain project documentation.
    • Uses AutoCAD to support project designs in Workstudio, and to help maintain electrical infrastructure records; assists with interfacing with other utility design and GIS software.
    • Performs right-of-way field investigations, easement research, and related support, as needed.
    • Performs surveying functions such as staking lines, locating easements and rights-of-way, and gathering data necessary to prepare site profiles; delineates property boundaries according to legal descriptions, while considering possible land use restrictions, deeds, and/or other pertinent property records.
    • Assembles material packages for electric distribution projects in advance of construction.
    • Works with and assists other utility personnel to complete necessary field work and assists with producing project documents, standards, specifications, and other items as required in support of department and division responsibilities and goals.
    • Performs related duties as required.
    • Responds regularly and promptly to work.
    Minimum Qualifications


    Required:

    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • Three (3) years of general engineering, design, or drafting experience or three (3) of experience in the electric industry in a technical-skilled trade that provides the skill set needed to perform the job.

    Preferred:

    • An Associate's degree (or higher) or graduation from a vocational/technical school with significant coursework in engineering technology, drafting, design technology, or a similar area of study.
    • Experience with GPS, engineering field staking software, and AutoCAD is a plus.
    Equivalent combinations of related education, experience, certification, and training may be considered.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


    Knowledge of:

    • Electrical power line construction.
    • Computer drafting.
    • National Electric Safety Code.

    Ability to:

    • Take the initiative to learn individual job tasks and continue to broaden knowledge levels by willingly accepting new responsibilities and attending training to advance skills.
    • Perform work based upon broad instructions and general supervision.
    • Interpret and modify standards, read and interpret complex design drawings, and neatly sketch complex diagrams.
    • Operate, maintain, and safeguard expensive engineering tools and field equipment such GPS unit, transit, tablet, etc.
    • Work in a team environment contributing design input in areas of expertise to accomplish project specific goals.
    • Learn and apply basic computer, technical, and mathematical skills.
    • Prepare clear, concise and complete reports, correspondence, and other written materials.
    • Organize workload, establish priorities, work under pressure, and meet established deadlines.
    • Be constantly alert and aware of the hazards involved and follow the safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing accidents.
    • Comply with City and department administrative directives, policies, and procedures.
    • Demonstrate satisfactory work performance and regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
    • Provide management with sound, positive advice, and information concerning the incumbent's area of responsibility.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and communicate effectively with the public and other required entities.

    Skills:

    • Strong computer skills, including ability to use Microsoft Office software.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills.
    Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements

    Texas Class C driver's license with a good driving record as measured by the City's evaluation system.

    Physical Demands


    Physical demands include but are not limited to: sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, driving, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, using hands and fingers to operate office equipment, machines and tools, and occasionally lifting and/or moving objects up to and including 25 pounds.

    Working Conditions

    Work is performed in an office setting (~50%) and outdoor field environment (~50%).

    While in the field, there is exposure to inclement weather, temperature extremes, moving mechanical parts and equipment, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, noise, vibration, electrical hazards, fumes, odors, dust, pollen, and other airborne particles.

    Equipment


    Work shall be performed with tools, appliances and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control, authority or approval of the design working ranges or limitations of those items; the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.


    Equipment may include but is not limited to: phone, computer, printer, fax, copier, measuring tape, basic surveying tools, and vehicle.
