    Job Title: EMT Advanced I/II
    Department: Emergency Services
    Hiring Range: $26.79
    Posted Internally and Externally
    This position will be hired as an EMT Advanced I or II depending on candidate qualifications. The pay rate for EMT Advanced I is $22.95/hour and the range for EMT Advanced II is $25.25/hour to $26.79/hour depending on education and experience above minimum qualifications.
    Purpose of the position: The main goal of these positions is to provide essential and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients, and respond to emergency rescue situations involving bodily injury or potential loss of life.
    Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience (required upon hiring): Graduation from high school or equivalent, supplemented by necessary coursework in emergency medical techniques or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Must be 18 years of age or older.
    Additional Training and Experience: Some prior experience in emergency medical service work is desirable.
    License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:
    • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the state of residence
    • Credentialed as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician by the North Carolina Office of EMS
    Essential Functions of the position:
    • Maintain readiness and serve as a mobile medical unit driver or attendant responding to emergency medical calls
    • Operate a mobile medical unit, providing necessary first aid to sick or injured individuals
    • Collect, communicate, and accurately document information about medical emergencies for quality patient care
    • Administer fluids and drugs to patients en route to the hospital
    • Participate in trainings to enhance medical technical skills and ambulance service/operation
    • Respond to non-emergency calls for patient transportation
    • Prepare incident reports and maintain patient treatment records
    • Assist in the inspection and maintenance of emergency medical service vehicles and equipment
    • Test and maintain standard medical equipment used in advanced life support ambulances
    • Act as preceptor for pre-hospital education programs
    • Perform other assigned duties
    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Abilities:
    • Apply fundamental knowledge to provide basic and selected advanced emergency care
    • Apply knowledge of the EMS system, safety/well-being, and medical/legal/ethical issues
    • Knowledge of equipment and supplies used in emergency patient care
    • Familiarity with County geography and road networks
    • Skill in diagnosing conditions and providing emergency care
    • Ability to respond quickly and calmly to emergencies
    • Ability to drive an ambulance safely at high speeds
    • Ability to lift significant weight
    • Ability to understand and follow instructions
    • Ability to interact tactfully and courteously with the public
    In order to maintain internal pay equity, salaries are fixed for Buncombe County employees. New employees are compensated based on their education and experience, with opportunities for pay increases through promotions and cost of living adjustments.
