    Description
    This is a full-time, 40-hour position


    The MGB "Community Care Van Program" is a new, innovative mobile health program dedicated to increasing access to quality healthcare for historically marginalized communities in the greater Boston area.

    The Medical Assistant (MA) is an integral member of a mobile health team that provides health services including screening and treatment for hypertension, diabetes and substance use disorder.


    Under the direction of the Clinical Lead (NP) or other provider, the Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting physicians, nurse practitioners, and/or nurses with evaluation, management, and treatment of patients who seek care at one of the mobile clinics.

    Their primary roles are to register patients in the electronic medical record system; to assure efficient patient flow; to assist providers within the scope of the MA skill set; to maintain neat, clean, and safe patient care areas, and to promote patient satisfaction by interacting with patients in a professional, friendly manner consistent with their needs.


    PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assists mobile team with the set-up and take-down of the mobile clinic site, including picking up vaccination/medical equipment from designated hospital
    • Assists Operations Manager with patient flow; greets arriving patients and directs to appropriate location as needed
    • Welcomes patient and registers/updates registration in EPIC

    Prepares patient for examination:
    o Checks patient's identification using three identifiers

    o Confirms patient's demographic information and update as necessary

    o Provides patient with relevant paperwork according to visit

    o Instructs patient in how to prepare for the physician or nurse practitioner (assisting as necessary)

    o Anticipates/sets up special equipment and or supplies needed for the visit

    o Alerts the physician or nurse practitioner when patient is ready and communicates pertinent clinical information/education

    o Conducts the following tasks as needed:
    § Documents chief complaint and symptom(s) in the medical record

    § Documents interval medical and family history in the medical record

    § Reviews current medication list and prescriptions that need to be renewed

    § Documents all drugs and other allergies

    § Reviews record for immunization and other health monitoring needs

    § Obtains age-appropriate vital signs and other measurements appropriate to visit


    • Assists the Provider and/or Nursing staff with patient care during the visit including
    o Conducting blood pressure checks

    o Collecting specimens and performing CLIA-waived tests according to protocol, including but not limited to:

    § Blood (phlebotomy)

    § Finger sticks (HbA1c point-of-care testing)

    § Sputum

    § Throat cultures

    o Assisting with clinical documentation relevant to patient visit on EPIC as directed


    • Documents testing/results and other critical data per protocols; uses appropriate flow sheets and screening forms for chronic disease management
    • Assists the Provider and Nursing staff with work outside the visit including but not limited to
    o Conducting follow-up care post-visit as directed (such as communicating test results to patients as directed by a provider or nurse, scheduling patients for follow up visits, and performing check-ins for patients placed on chronic disease management plan)

    o Faxing, mailing, or calling in prescription renewals as directed by the prescribing provider and under the supervision of the prescriber


    • Maintains neat, clean, and safe exam rooms and treatment areas
    o Assures patient care areas are neat, clean, professional-looking

    o Assures exam and treatment areas are properly stocked, equipped, and secured

    o Assures all equipment is in good working order

    o Cleans exam rooms and equipment after each patient use per protocol


    • Promotes customer satisfaction by interacting with patients in a professional, friendly manner consistent with their needs
    o Recognizes and respects cultural diversity

    o Adapts communication to the patient's understanding

    o Employs professional telephone and interpersonal techniques


    • Functions as an integral part of the mobile health care team
    o Interacts in a professional, cooperative way with other staff

    o Accepts and delegates responsibilities in a positive manner

    o Is a team player and offers to help with tasks outside of their role

    o Engages in constructive problem solving with others in the practice as problems arise

    o Attends and participates in practice staff meetings


    • Performs other tasks (when not "in the field") as delegated by Operations Manager

    SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES
    REQUIRED:


    REQUIRED

    • Ability to be self-sufficient and take initiative
    • Excellent critical thinking skills
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Ability to be flexible and adept to last minute changes as it pertains to scheduling, workflow, and other operational logistics
    • Comply with established risk management and safety procedures
    • Comply with all local, state and federal privacy and confidentiality rules and regulations
    • Sound judgment and problem-solving ability
    • Ability to prioritize tasks in a complex and busy environment and see them through to completion
    • Accuracy and attention to detail
    • Maintain or obtain CPR certification and participate in site-based CPR drills (may be obtained through onboarding)

    PREFERRED

    • Bilingual candidate in Spanish is strongly preferred
    • Experience working with diverse populations and community organizations
    • Phlebotomy training

    LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS:

    • Certification is preferred

    EDUCATION:
    H.S. Diploma (or equivalent) required


    EXPERIENCE:
    1 year of experience in physician office setting is preferred

    Previous clinical experience working as an EMT, home health aid, or nursing assistant is preferred


    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    This position entails a significant amount of time in a mobile/community environment.

    While much of the work may take place on the mobile clinic (van) there are duties performed outside and adjacent to the mobile clinic.

    It will be necessary to dress for varying weather conditions as needed. The position requires the ability to commute to and from site locations and also work remotely as required.
