Founded in 2017, Activ Surgical is a new breed medical device start-up focused on improving patient outcomes and reducing costs to healthcare systems through the integration of advanced computer vision and artificial intelligence designed to seamlessly fit within operating room workflow while providing advanced imaging and diagnostic accuracy during surgery.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer interested in the development of medical device imaging systems based on visible and near infrared imaging. The position will report directly to the Senior Director of Systems Engineering. The person in this role is expected to proactively provide technical solutions that require deep knowledge of their engineering field of study. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated individual who is excited by the prospect of working in a dynamic, start-up environment.

Specific Responsibilities Include

1. Development of new software features with C# / C++ for medical device imaging products

2. Working on real-time low-latency rendering pipeline for infrared camera systems – working on camera image acquisition, image processing, advanced visualization algorithms, and rendering

3. Utilizing and interfacing with image processing libraries, frameworks, and SDKs for development of new SW features: OpenCV, OpenCL, CUDA, OpenGL, DirectX, WPF

4. Full-stack development - working on all aspects of a software application (backend, front-end, interfaces, data) that meet design input requirements for an FDA regulated product

5. Using GIT for source control management – management of pull requests and collaboration with other developers to merge features into a release

6. Management and tracking of issues within JIRA issue tracking tool

7. Writing design documentation for release within a formal quality system

8. Writing and executing unit testing within established frameworks

9. Leadership and management of software releases

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies

1. Required: experience with C# or C++

2. Required: self-motivated with strong problem solving and analytical skills

3. Required: proficiency with existing source control tools, including GIT

4. Required: strong interpersonal and presentation skills

5. Preferred: experience with medical device software lifecycle development (IEC 62304)

6. Preferred: familiarity with QT or WPF with .NET framework

7. Preferred: exposure to DirectX or OpenGL rendering

8. Preferred: experience with software architecture design

9. Preferred: knowledge and understanding of unit testing frameworks

10. Desired: experience developing C++ applications for nVidia platforms (e.g. Jetson)

11. Desired: experience producing requirements, architecture documentation, trace matrices, and software configuration management

12. Desired: some limited exposure to Xilinx / ARM embedded software development

Typical Experience

10+ years relevant industry experience preferred.

Typical Education

Bachelor's degree in software engineering or computer science. Masters degree preferred.
