    Job Summary:
    The FRI Applied Food Microbiology and Safety Laboratory conducts practical research and testing of food formulations. Results from these studies are used to identify strategies to inhibit microbial growth and toxin production or to enhance the rate of inactivation of foodborne bacterial pathogens.

    The successful candidate will be directly supervised but must be capable of working independently and coordinating multiple projects in a fast-paced work environment. Excellent oral/written communication skills, fluency in English, good interpersonal skills, and a proven record of working effectively as a team member are necessary. Candidates should be capable of performing activities required for food challenge studies, including mouse bioassays, moving/distributing food materials & supplies, operating equipment, and handling bacteria and chemicals in a safe manner. Candidate must be available to work outside usual business hours if required.
    Responsibilities: Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.
    • 30% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
    • 20% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
    • 15% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
    • 15% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
    • 10% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
    • 10% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

    Qualifications:
    Prior experience in food microbiology is required. Relevant undergraduate experience will be considered. Must have successfully completed coursework with bacteriology, including laboratory skills with classic microbiology. Research experience with Listeria monocytogenes, Clostridium perfringens, and Salmonella preferred. Must be computer literate and have proficiency in Microsoft applications.

    It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

    Salary:
    Minimum $45,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

    Additional Information:
    o A criminal background check is required
    o Candidate must be able to pass screening to work with Tier 1 Select Agents and with handling of laboratory animals (mice).
    o A 12 month evaluation period will be required
