Job DescriptionThe Elementary School Guidance Counselor provides comprehensive counseling services to elementary school students, focusing on academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development. The counselor collaborates with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to support students' overall well-being and academic success.
**Responsibilities:**
1. **Individual Counseling:**
Provide individual counseling sessions to students to address academic, social, emotional, and behavioral concerns.
Conduct assessments and evaluations to identify students' strengths, challenges, and needs.
Develop and implement personalized counseling plans to help students achieve their academic and personal goals.
2. **Group Counseling:**
Facilitate group counseling sessions on topics such as social skills, conflict resolution, and self-esteem building.
Organize and lead support groups for students experiencing common challenges or transitions.
3. **Classroom Guidance Lessons:**
Deliver classroom guidance lessons on topics relevant to students' developmental needs, such as bullying prevention, study skills, and decision-making.
Collaborate with teachers to integrate social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum into classroom activities.
4. **Crisis Intervention:**
Provide crisis intervention and support to students during emergencies, traumatic events, or critical incidents.
Coordinate with school administrators, faculty, and outside agencies to ensure students receive appropriate assistance and resources.
5. **Parent and Family Support:**
Communicate regularly with parents and families to discuss students' progress, concerns, and interventions.
Offer guidance and resources to parents on parenting strategies, family dynamics, and community support services.
6. **Collaboration and Consultation:**
Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other school staff to support students' academic and behavioral needs.
Consult with outside professionals, such as psychologists, therapists, and social workers, to coordinate services for students with more complex needs.
7. **Documentation and Record-Keeping:**
Maintain accurate and confidential records of counseling sessions, assessments, and interventions.
Prepare reports and documentation as required by school policies, regulations, and state guidelines.
8. **Professional Development:**
Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance counseling skills, stay informed about best practices, and meet licensure requirements.
Engage in self-reflection and continuous improvement to provide effective and culturally responsive counseling services.
**Qualifications:**
Master's degree in School Counseling or related field from an accredited institution.
State licensure or certification as a school counselor.
Experience working with elementary school students in a counseling or related capacity.
Knowledge of child development, counseling theories, and evidence-based interventions.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and families.
Proficiency in using technology for counseling and record-keeping purposes.
