    Description
    Perform as a Technical Services Specialist with primary duties as a Master Electrician and Assistant Production Manager.

    Installs, tests, and repairs electrical services and a variety of electrical equipment such as transformers, panel boards, disconnect switches, motor starters, relays, and computer cables to ensure electrical power meets national and city electrical code requirements.

    Maintains and operates emergency generators and all transfer gear equipment.

    Locates and determines electrical malfunction, using test instruments such as ammeter, amp probe, oscilloscope, and test lamp.

    Repairs malfunction by such methods as replacing burnt out elements and fuses, bypassing or replacing defective wiring, filing switch contact points, and cleaning or rewiring motors, using hand tools.

    Tests electrical equipment such as generators and heaters for safety and efficiency.


    Plans new or modified electrical installations to minimize waste of materials and provide access for future maintenance consistent with specifications and local electrical code.

    Prepares sketches showing location of all wiring and equipment or follows diagrams or blueprints prepared by others. Installs fixtures, motors, and other electrical equipment.

    Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assemble, and installs electrical conduit using such tools as hacksaw, pipe-threader, and conduit bender. Pulls wires through conduit and splices wires as needed. Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment.

    Installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels, fastening them in place with screws or bolts.

    Connects power cables to equipment and installs grounding leads to include temporary power distributions.


    Tests continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of all components, using standard instruments such as ohmmeter and oscilloscope.

    Observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement. Repairs faulty equipment or systems.

    Inspects circuits and wiring for specified shielding and grounding and repairs or rewires system according to building codes and safety regulations.

    Obtains permits, and schedules inspection of electrical equipment and coordinates repair of same. Monitors work of journey electricians and subcontractors to ensure that it meets specifications and electrical codes. Performs as lead worker on special projects.


    Assists Maintenance Team Leader (MTL) with HVAC and refrigeration operational function, repair, and maintenance; monitors and adjusts HVAC heat and air conditioning levels for the Coliseum during events.

    Monitors HVAC system and refrigeration/freezer equipment for good repair and function; assists MTL with the supervision of HVAC and refrigeration equipment subcontract technicians.

    Performs technical operations of the lighting and sound systems and related technical theatre and arena systems as required. Mixes sound and provides P.A. interface for events as needed.


    Assists the Production department with assembly, operation, and maintenance of the Coliseum sound, lights, stage and event production equipment to ensure that all event requirements are met; assists the Senior Event Production Manager to procure and to maintain an inventory of same.

    Performs or arranges for preventative maintenance and repairs on equipment such as amplifiers, speakers, microphones, spotlights, etc.

    In the absence of the Sr. Event Production Manager, supervises event production personnel such as runners, contractors, stagehands, etc.

    Demonstrates regular and punctual attendance.

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Graduation from high school or successful completion of GED. Associates degree in Electrical Engineering or related field preferred. Requires five years of experience in producing events and/or working with sound amplifying equipment and theatrical staging. Requires one year of supervisory experience. Master Electrician license required or must be obtained within one year of employment.

    Ability to diagnose and correct electrical power, lighting or communication failures. Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety and fire code precautions applicable to event production in an arena. Must have good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assignments under time constraints.

    Ability to plan, organize and supervise personnel in the assembly, operation, and completion of basic repairs to production equipment; ability to plan and schedule work; ability to maintain records; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships; ability to foster effective public relations with diverse populations; ability to work independently.

    A combination of experience and education which qualifies the applicant may be considered in lieu of the more specific requirements above.


    Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.

    Must successfully pass pre-employment testing for alcohol and controlled substances; will be subject to random testing while an incumbent in this position.

    Must successfully pass a background check related to this position.

    Reports to the Assistant Director for Events and Operations (ADEO) in coordination with Division managers, to periodically monitor work and progress.

    Requires considerable independent judgment and responsible decision-making. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and be able to interact effectively with diverse populations. Frequent contact with artists, promoters, show production technical personnel, contractors, guests and other department personnel. Must be able to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays based on scheduled events. Working conditions can be hazardous; requires occasional work at heights and work performed in a variety of environments. This position is non-exempt.
