Description
At Houston Methodist, the Data Specialist is responsible for compiling and maintaining various statistical summary data.Additional duties include designing, developing and preparing routine statistical reports as well as responding to requests for information from various data collection systems.
PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Collaborates with all members of the team by actively communicating and reporting pertinent information and data in a comprehensive manner.
- Serves as a resource for statistical information pertaining to research studies, registry requirements, and/or strategic initiatives conducted within the department or in collaboration with other departments.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Compiles and maintains various daily, monthly and yearly statistical summary data utilizing hospital, clinical, and/or departmental specific information systems.
- Prepares and provides reports needed on a routine basis for physicians, staff and/or management.
- Develops and maintains databases.
- Extracts, develops and/or analyzes information and statistical data for research studies, project requests and surveys. Meets designated goals for assigned compliance reports.
- Provides and/or sends information requested by internal/external customers (e.g., patients, physicians, sponsors, registries) in a timely manner and meets time sensitive deadlines.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Supports department with data abstraction for regulatory/accreditation requirements and/or performance/process improvement projects.
- Evaluates data to ensure accuracy and completeness. Ensures that protocol (research and nonresearch) required events took place and monitors the reporting of data as applicable to scope of department.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Handles department resources and assignment effectively and efficiently as evidenced by prudent use of office supplies, timely data abstraction, data entry, and data submission.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Identifies and assumes responsibility of own learning needs, consults with healthcare team experts and seeks continuing education opportunities to meet those needs. Completes and updates the individual development plan (IDP) on an ongoing basis. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management.
- Assesses and analyzes present and future needs, best evidence, trends, challenges, and opportunities related to department strategic goals.

EDUCATION
- Bachelor's degree in a health care related field required or four years of experience required in lieu of degree
WORK EXPERIENCE
- Experience in data abstraction and collection obtained via education or experience required
- Two years of hospital or allied health data management experience preferred

- Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
- Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, medical records, or constituent relationship management (as applied to department assigned)
- General knowledge of statistical analysis techniques
- Ability to independently analyze and solve problems
- Interpersonal skills for interfacing with all levels of customers and collaborating across clinical and nonclinical departments
- Ability to handle multiple priorities with good attention to detail
- Ability to enhance reporting effectiveness and efficiency
