Harm Reduction Coordinator Essential Functions:


Under the supervision of the Harm Reduction Manager, the incumbent is responsible for the planning, coordinating, and implementation of Harm Reduction services.


These services include the following:

successful engagement of individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) through linkage to prevention, treatment, and harm reduction services at HAS and in the community; developing/strengthening partnerships with harm reduction community stakeholders and treatment providers; connecting individuals to appropriate services and treatment; and providing case management services to individuals with OUD.


Harm Reduction Coordinator Responsibilities:


  • Provide education and support for individuals with OUD with regards to health promotion, community resources/referrals, etc.
  • Maintain working relationships with community partner agencies offering various harm reduction services to individuals with OUD.
  • Develop partnership opportunities with agencies and other sources to promote the health of individuals affected by OUD.
  • Actively participate in relevant networks/coalitions serving clients affected by OUD.
  • Develop and deliver prevention education workshops to target populations and service agencies about OUD, harm reduction, HAS programs/services, and safer substance use practices.
  • Develop and deliver training and workshops to meet the needs of those at risk for and those who have an OUD.
  • Deliver harm reduction information, referral services, and direct outreach services in a variety of venues frequented by individuals who have an OUD or at risk of developing an OUD. Provide information regarding support services available.
  • Work with target population to help them cope more effectively with issues and concerns related to their substance use.
  • Liaise with appropriate community resources on behalf of clients.
  • Coordinate information resources on harm reduction and care options for clients with OUD.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Harm Reduction Coordinator Qualifications:


  • Ability to transfer knowledge and skills in areas such as, but not limited to: engagement, developing a therapeutic alliance, harm reduction, motivational interviewing, traumainformed services, cultural competence, conflict mediation, etc.;
  • Commitment and ability to communicate and engage staff on implementation of harm reduction values and practice approach.
  • Ability to effectively create and deliver training and technical assistance using a variety of instructional techniques such as didactic lecture, role playing, experiential learning, team exercises, group discussions, multimedia, etc.;
  • Bilingual/Bicultural (English/Spanish) required.
  • Flexible to adapt to schedules of work load to the needs and demands of the program.
  • Possession of a valid Illinois driver's license and willingness to use personal vehicle in course of employment.
  • Ability to travel to various agency locations throughout the Chicagoland area
  • H.A.S. requires all staff to work on site.

Education and Experience Requirements:


  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required. Bachelor's degree, from a regionally accredited educational institution which has U.S. Department of Education approval, is preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience working within a harm reduction approach (personal experience participating in harm reduction services may substitute for up to 1 year of work experience).
