Under general supervision, incumbents in the Fire Prevention Inspector I/II classifications perform initial and annual inspections of existing buildings and fire protection systems, and review of new construction and fire protection systems to insure compliance with laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the control and prevention of fires; develop, organize and coordinate specific fire and life safety programs and services; issue fire permits; and provide responsible administrative and technical assistance in support of city's Fire Prevention programs and its customers.


  • Appointment may be made at the Fire Prevention Inspector I or II level depending on qualifications. This recruitment will also establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill additional vacancies for up to one year._

Fire Prevention Inspector I:


_
Incumbents are responsible for performing a variety of fire prevention, customer service, administrative, and public outreach/educational tasks and duties while learning the more complex and technical fire inspection and code enforcement functions.

Initially, under close supervision, positions in this job class conduct the more routine fire inspections and follow-up re-inspections and administer specialized fire prevention and education programs while training to perform the more complex and responsible fire inspection activities.


_Fire Prevention Inspector II:

_ This journey level class in the Fire Prevention Inspector series performs the full range of professional fire prevention inspection duties, as assigned.

Fire Prevention Inspector II is fully competent and carries out duties associated with the enforcement of applicable life and safety code ordinances; inspection of buildings and facilities; delivery of public education on fire and life safety; fire hazard identification, reduction, and mitigation; weed abatement; and other related duties as assigned.

The Fire Prevention Inspector II provides technical assistance to Chief Officers and other fire prevention and suppression personnel and may provide general supervision to lower level positions.

Fire Prevention Inspector I:
_** General supervision is provided by a Fire Division Chief or his/her designee. Responsibilities may also include providing technical supervision to lower level positions in a training environment.


_ Fire Prevention Inspector II:
_
General supervision is provided by a Fire Division Chief or his/her designee. Responsibilities may also include providing supervision, leadership, training, and assignment of work to subordinate technical and clerical staff.

_ Fire Prevention Inspector I/II:
_


  • Assisting with and/or inspecting commercial, residential, educational and industrial occupancies for compliance with applicable codes and standards for fire prevention utilizing applicable safety practices; recommending appropriate corrective actions in response to noted hazards and violations.
  • Basic plan review work.
  • Assisting with and/or monitoring, coordinating, and participating in the followup to all code violations to ensure timely correction and/or appropriate penalties occur; issuing citations as necessary.
  • Assisting with and/or implementing, managing and coordinating a variety of fire prevention programs, public education presentations, and vegetation management programs.
  • Assisting with and/or inspecting new and existing construction projects and fire protection systems to ensure compliance with plans, specifications and applicable fire protection laws, ordinances, and regulations and conditions of approval.
  • Planning, developing, and/or conducting fire and life safety education programs; identifying learning objectives, training methods, materials and presentation requirements to meet and/or respond to community needs; coordinating and implementing special related programs and events.
  • Writing, reviewing, recommending for purchase, and/or updates fire and life safety educational materials and presentations; preparing advertising and announcements for training and related programs; coordinating with media representatives as assigned; acting as a primary source of data and information related to city's fire and life safety programs.
