We are the first self-funded SOS organization in the United States. Since our beginning, we have carried on the successful track record of SOS-Kinderdorf International in transforming children with a broken childhood into caring, productive, self-reliant adults. In addition, we have pioneered a number of successful programs such as providing SOS Children continued support as they enter young adulthood, and empowering parents to pursue successful reunification of their families.

    The Opportunity: The Accounting Intern has the opportunity to work directly with the Chief Financial Officer and learn best practices for safeguarding an organization's assets by working on compliance regarding all aspects of resource outlay and usage by the organization. This includes use and preservation of cash and physical assets, as well as contract performance by SOS Illinois staff and vendors.

    Areas of Involvement:

    • Assists the accounting staff who oversee Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable, including the CFO.
    • Collaborates with Business Managers to assure performance of Home Account accounting and reporting including budgets, checking accounts, funding, and records.
    • Assists with payroll and collaborates with Human Resources (HR) regarding accuracy and timeliness of all payroll and payment for: Health plan, 403(b) retirement plan, and additional approved benefit plans.
    • Assists with preparing payroll journal entries, including accruals, and resulting allocations to functional department expense categories and reconciles quarterly payroll tax return reporting with payroll service.
    • Compiles statistical information needed for month-end closing and maintains fixed asset register and amortization/depreciation schedules through accounting system.
    • Collaborates with the CFO and HR to prepare schedules and analysis for external auditors and tax preparers, including W-9 vendor reporting, vendor listings, 1099 filings, and employee benefits data.
    • Assists with budget preparation.
    • Maintains compliance with record retention best practice policies and procedures.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelors' degree, or work towards obtaining a degree, preferably in accounting or finance related field.
    • Knowledge and experience with Excel.
    • Ability to translate financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with — programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds
    • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
    • A multitasker with the ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environment
    • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and customer service are important.
    • Ability to pass DCFS required criminal background check including CANTS and SORS.
    • Ability to travel to all agency locations using self-provided, reliable and insured transportation as necessary.
    • Ability to work in an alcohol, tobacco, drug, and firearm-free professional workplace.
