    Manage the specific individual and group therapy services provided to student athletes, oversees and provides mental performance services to teams and individuals, and develops and administers prevention and outreach programming to teams, coaches, and other athletics staff.

    This position fulfills the NCAA mandate to provide dedicated specialized services for varsity athletes.


    Essential Duties:

    • Provide counseling, diagnostic assessment, and crisis intervention to student-athletes dealing with mental health and developmental challenges. Work with resources to provide coordinated support to student athletes in need. Provide culturally appropriate individual, group counseling, and outreach to diverse student populations. Work as part of an integrated treatment team, collaborating with athletic trainers, team physicians, sports dietitians, etc., as appropriate.
    • In conjunction with the Executive Director, provide leadership and administrative oversight of mental health and mental performance services to student-athletes and consultation to teams, coaches, and athletic support staff. Serve as the athletics representative for mental health and mental performance to external facing stakeholders and outside consultants and facilitates streamlined communications between divisions. Maintain a presence within Big East and NCAA organizations focused on student-athlete mental health and wellness. Provide occasional scheduled observations of practices for those teams the position is the identified point of contact to and be available for impromptu consultation and brief interventions with student-athletes, coaches, and athletic support staff.
    • Provide diagnostic assessment and crisis intervention in acute crisis such as risk of suicide, trauma, and/or major campus catastrophe. Provide crisis intervention for student-athletes who are experiencing acute emotional distress as a result of varying emergencies such as trauma e.g. sexual assault, death, substance use, or who are a danger to themselves or others. Participate in monthly after hours, on-call crisis rotation.
    • Provide scheduled outreach programming for teams, coaches, athletic support staff, and athletic administration, including but not limited to team workshops, affinity groups, and coach/staff education. Programming emphasizes evidence-based practices for overall student-athlete health and wellbeing while also providing non-clinical support and psychoeducation to athletics staff, including coaches. Serve as coordinator of other counseling center staff member's programming/outreach services to the Athletics population.
    • Supervise the Clinical Sports Psychologist and assist with the development and implementation of a training program for advanced doctoral students to work with student athletes along with the Associate Director of Training.
    • Perform other administrative tasks, including attend larger department staff meetings, regularly meet with the Executive Director, and conduct meetings with department staff dedicated to student-athlete specialized services. Maintain records and clinical information consistent with professional standards and practices. Meet weekly with the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Health and Wellness.

    Marginal Duties:

    • Perform all other duties as may be required.
    Education and Experience Required


    • Ph.
    D in clinical or counseling psychology from an accredited institution required.

    • Three to five years' experience providing consultation in a university setting and building collaborative relations with coaches, trainers, and other athletic staff or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Experience providing clinical supervision to doctoral level trainees.
    • Licensed or licensed-eligible in RI as a psychologist.
    • Certification in mental performance consultation (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sports Psychology (AASP) or completed educational requirements for CMPC and eligibility to sit for certification exam within one year.
    • Effective written and verbal skills.
    • Experience working with student-athletes in a higher education institution and understanding of NCAA mandates. Work with Division I level athletes preferred.
    • Proficient diagnostic skills and excellent treatment planning skills.
    • Excellent leadership, strategic, and operational planning skills.
    • Solid consultation skills.

    Employee Status Full Time Salary Grade 22 (Min. $87,948/Mid. $114,332/Max. $140,716) Salary Information


    Employees are normally hired between the minimum and the midpoint of a position's grade range to which a position has been assigned, depending on experience and qualifications.
