Classification Description Summary
Develop, promote, and maintain a wide range of volunteer opportunities for the Victim Services Unit (VSU) in the Police Department; recruits, assigns and coordinates the training and use of volunteers and interns in the program; coordinates tasks and activities of volunteer/intern staff; works together with other departments and partnering agencies; and provides administrative support relative to assigned area of responsibility.
Essential Functions
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Coordinate, plan, organize, and maintain the day-to-day operations of the VSU Volunteer/Outreach Program.
Develop and implement the process for solicitation, identification and selection of volunteers for the program. Refer qualified applicants for background investigation.
Schedule, coordinate and conduct orientation, and training of volunteers.
Assist in assembling and preparing the annual budget for assigned area; and, monitor expenditures against budget.
Organize and participate in volunteer recognition programs and special events for crime victim awareness.
Prepare informational and educational materials and plan and implement outreach to inform and educate potential volunteers regarding opportunities and requirements.
Introduce volunteers to the department and specifics of the program; provide ongoing information regarding policies, procedures and regulations and conduct informational training sessions regularly.
Review performance evaluations and/or complaints concerning volunteers; assist in counseling or providing additional training as necessary.
Recommend and participate in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing volunteer services; outreach and education; development and implementation of policies and procedures.
Research information, prepare and make presentations to various educational, civic, business, government and service groups regarding the Victim Services Unit and issues relating to victimization.
Attend and participate in a variety of boards, commissions, committees and professional group meetings. Prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
Maintain records and monitoring and evaluating activities such as monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
Prepare and distribute quarterly newsletter for the Victim Services Unit. This includes collecting relevant features, photographs, data and other information.
Create a regular publishing schedule for Victim Services Unit social media content. Ensure announcements, training opportunities, links to newsletter and awareness activities are posted to the appropriate department sites.
Provide responsible staff assistance in the police department, relative to assigned area of responsibility.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training:
Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
Two (2) years of verifiable volunteer or paid experience with a public or community based service organization in program development or administration which has included experience coordinating, supervising or training volunteers. One (1) year of college education (thirty (30) credits of college coursework in public or business administration, marketing, public relations, a social or behavioral science, or a closely related field) may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.
