    Mary McDowell Friends School (MMFS) invites applications for a full-time STEAM Teacher beginning August 2024.

    Job Title: Upper School STEAM Teacher

    Reports to: Division Director, Assistant Director of Educational Technology

    Essential Responsibilities and Duties :

    In order to facilitate daily work and project-based planning, the primary role is defined in four categories:

    Students

    • Creates a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that honors and nurtures each child's individual identity and academic ability, including but not limited to scaffolding and differentiation.
    • In addition to reviewing and improving existing curriculum, develops and leads appropriate, engaging, and integrated problem-based STEAM, fabrication, and coding curriculum for students in grades 9-12.
    • Support digital citizenship initiatives by setting a culture of responsible, balanced tech use among students.

    Faculty

    • Support digital citizenship initiatives by assisting the Ed-Tech team in facilitating faculty PD on the subject.
    • Researches and seeks professional development around current best practices in STEAM, making, and computer science education.
    • Partner with the College Guidance team to proactively seek out and assist school colleagues with their programs including, but not limited to STEAM planning, instruction, etc.

    Teaching Responsibilities

    • Teach one or more sections of Computer Science Principles to 11th and 12th grade students
    • Teach one or more sections of STEAM Fundamentals to 11th and 12th grade students
    • Facilitate a Making or Robotics cross-curricular or Facilitate a Making or STEAM based club
    • Lead advisory group of 5-7 students by serving as an academic liaison between individual students and their teachers in addition to leading community building activities with the advisory group as a whole

    Community

    • Must be knowledgeable in Design Thinking, coding, and STEAM instructional methods and trends. Work with others to spread those ideologies within classrooms of other disciplines
    • Have experience in programming various languages - Block Coding, Python, HTML, JavaScript
    • Knowledge of other technology and engineering skills such as Arduino, Lego Robotics (EV3 and NXT), 3D printers, and Tinker CAD.
    • Experience across multiple fabrication domains, with a steadfast focus on safety.
    • Ability to help develop, build, define, stock, and organize lab space.
    • Knowledge of digital citizenship education and best practices for students.
    • Knowledge of pedagogy in the 21st century as it relates to technology with the ability to adapt to rapidly shifting priorities in both technology and education.
    • Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively, is self-directed, flexible, and organized.
    • Excellent time management skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)
    • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and as part of a high-performing team with exceptional initiative and judgment.
    • Strong problem-solving skills, decision making, and research capabilities.

    Supervisory Responsibility

    This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

    This is a full-time, exempt ten-month position that follows the academic calendar. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a half hour paid lunch; faculty meetings occur every Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand and will be scheduled in advance.

    Travel

    Travel between campuses is necessary on occasion for meetings, are scheduled with advanced notice, and are within walking distance from each other.

    Work Environment & Physical Demands

    This job requires the ability to maintain the physical capacity required to navigate the school environment and to ensure the safety of the students. The ability to open filing cabinets and bend or stand for long periods of time, as necessary. Classroom locations vary based on student schedules and staff may need to teach from different rooms.

    Required Education & Experience

    A Master's Degree or a Bachelor's with commensurate skills and 3-5+ years teaching experience are required. An experience teaching and creating content for STEAM related courses. Independent school experience is preferable, as well as prior work with students with learning disabilities.
