Job Description Summary:


  • The city of Goodyear is seeking a Police Assistant to join the Goodyear Police Department. This position is under general supervision and provides support to sworn police officers by responding to low priority patrol calls in the lobby, by phone or in person and conducting field investigations, assisting with traffic control, motorist assists, various traffic hazards and minor vehicle collisions, collecting evidence, preparing reports, performing data entry, writing citations and conducting routine patrol for parking violations. Additionally, supporting sworn police officers by assisting with searching, fingerprinting, transporting and booking prisoners, allowing sworn officers to remain available to respond to other incidents and crimes. Position requires working rotating shifts and extended workdays outside the regular working hours and overtime, weekends and holidays.

Examination process for this position will include:

  • Panel Interview (s)
  • Police Background Investigation which includes polygraph, psychological, and controlled substance screening and medical evaluation.

Essential Functions:


  • This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following functions do not identify all duties performed by the incumbent. Other duties and responsibilities will be performed as assigned._
  • Investigates and prepares and reviews detailed police reports documenting criminal and noncriminal activities that do not require immediate arrest or contact with suspect(s) and determines if activity is a civil or criminal complaint.
  • Responds to walkin citizen reports in the police lobby, calls for service at the crime scene or by phone.
  • Enters data into multiple law enforcement computer systems; proofreads work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Investigates minor accident scenes, issues citations or assists officers at accident scenes by directing traffic and laying out cone and flare patterns, taking witness statements and collecting identity information.
  • Issues parking citations within the City; tows and arranges for storage of impounded vehicles.
  • Photographs crime and accident scenes; provides documentation and logs photographs into evidence.
  • Identifies and collects evidence at crime scenes using proper collection techniques; documents evidence in report form and properly enters evidence into storage.
  • Performs security checks of City parks and schools; conducts site surveillance as assigned.
  • Participates in booking, searching and identifying prisoners; verifies information on booking forms; photographs and fingerprints prisoners, processes property for safekeeping, completes online booking process.
  • Provides transport for prisoners and other individuals as directed; inspects and cleans vehicles as required. Maintains the safety and security of detainees and facility; controls prisoner behavior and promotes acceptable conduct.
  • Performs fingerprinting services.
  • Testifies in criminal, civil and traffic court as required.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Requirements:

Formal Education/Knowledge:Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Experience:Minimum one year experience in a related field.

Certifications and Other Requirements:Valid Driver's License

Reading:Work requires the ability to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and/or legal documents.

Math:Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Writing:Work requires the ability to write reports, proposals, worksheets, and letters.

Managerial: Job has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others but may provide advice/direction to an employee with less experience/skill or tenure. An example would be a "II" advising a "I".
