    About the UNC School of Government & the Criminal Justice Innovation Lab


    The UNC School of Government (SOG) engages in practical scholarship that helps public officials and citizens understand and improve state and local government.

    The SOG offers up to 200 courses, webinars, and conferences for more than 12,000 public officials each year.

    Faculty members annually publish approximately 50 books, reports, articles, bulletins, and other print and online content related to state and local government.

    The SOG is also home to a nationally ranked graduate program in public administration and specialized centers focused on information technology, environmental finance, and criminal justice.


    The Criminal Justice Innovation Lab (the Lab) seeks to promote a fair and effective criminal justice system, public safety, and economic prosperity.

    It brings together a broad range of stakeholders to learn about criminal justice problems, supports their efforts to develop and implement innovative consensus solutions, and conducts empirical evaluations to help stakeholders measure the impact of their efforts.


    Our work spans three areas:
    1) producing foundational research, including legal research, research summaries, and original empirical research; 2) conducting pilot projects supporting stakeholders' efforts to develop, implement, and evaluate innovative solutions; and 3) creating ready-to-use legal and evidence-based tools like flowcharts, templates, procedures, forms.

    Our work focuses on 'front end' criminal justice issues, such as pretrial, policing, and overcriminalization, structural issues such as indigent defense, and the 'back end' issues of reentry and second chances.

    Position Summary

    Position Description


    The Lab is seeking a Graduate Research Assistant to support the development and maintenance of the Lab's Measuring Justice Dashboard.

    Under the supervision of and in collaboration with the Dashboard Consultant, the student will:


    • Write UI and server code in R Shiny to visualize metrics using existing criminal justice datasets.
    • Incorporate code into the existing architecture of the Measuring Justice app.
    • Collaborate with Dashboard Team to develop proofs-of-concept for new metric visualizations.
    • Collaborate with Dashboard Team to incorporate feedback and revisions to new and existing dashboard metrics.
    • Troubleshoot bugs and issues with dashboard code.
    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

    Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience


    • Proficiency with R programming language.
    • Familiarity with R Shiny and reactive programming.
    • Familiarity with visualization packages in R, such as Highcharter.
    • Ability to work throughout the semester.
    • Ability to work in a nonpartisan, nonadvocacy environment.

    • Proficiency in app creation through R Shiny and the Golem package
