Department Summary
The University of Oregon's Division of Equity and Inclusion (DEI) seeks to appoint a dynamic, skilled and inclusive leader who will make a transformative mark on a dedicated team that is passionate about equity, inclusion and innovation.
DEI serves as a cornerstone of inclusive excellence, championing equitable access and resources for faculty, administrators, staff, students, and community members. Our work, guided by the UO IDEAL framework, embodies Diversity, Inclusion Equity and Belonging.
We provide a wealth of information, resources, and expertise to bolster diversity, inclusion, and equity across the university. DEI encompasses five key units which foster alignment, collaboration and relationships: Office of the Vice President for Equity and Inclusion (VPEI), the Center on Diversity and Community (CoDaC), the Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence (CMAE), Campus and Community Engagement, and the Multicultural Center (MCC).
Our offices, located strategically across campus, underscore our commitment to promoting a multicultural community and ensuring success and belonging at the University of Oregon.
Position Summary
The Communications Manager (CM) plays a crucial role in advancing the mission of DEI and UO by leading the development and execution of communication strategies that promote equity, inclusion, belonging and accessibility across the university community through the lens of love, authenticity, courage and empathy, or LACE.
The CM position reports to the Vice President of Equity and Inclusion and will be at the forefront of developing multi-media and multi-modal (website, email, social media, print) communications campaigns that empower change for DEI and all its units. This position will supervise a small team of students, vendors, interns, and freelancers in creating compelling content that reaches the campus community and external stakeholders. In compliance with brand standards as set by University Communications (UC), the CM will work closely with colleagues in UC and other campus and community partners.
The CM will be a leader in shaping the DEI narrative, responding to media requests, and will require a nuanced understanding of intersectional diversity, equity and inclusion issues facing higher education.
The person in this role will be a creative, detail-oriented project manager with a passion for the value of social justice and anti-racism and the potential that communications can have to build inclusive community and affect positive change. They will need to be able to be energized by change, adaptable, and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively. The successful candidate will also have a good understanding of First Amendment law and how to ensure that DEI's policies and procedures are in keeping with it while also cultivating nurturing environments for all.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Three years of professional experience in communications or public relations, with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Experience communicating DEI concepts, issues, and best practices.
• Experience with Drupal, Emma, Constant Contact or other constituent relationship management (CRM) systems.
Professional Competencies
• Strategic Communication: ability to develop and execute a comprehensive communication strategy that aligns with the university's DEI goals and objectives.
• Multimedia Proficiency: competency in multimedia content creation, including video production, graphic design, and social media management. Proficient use of Adobe Suite products and understanding of HTML and CSS.
• Content Creation: the ability to create diverse and engaging written and multimedia content to convey DEI messages effectively.
• Leadership: demonstrated leadership skills in guiding a student communications team, setting direction, and fostering collaboration among team members.
• Crisis Communication: the ability to anticipate and respond to critical DEI-related issues and crises with effective and sensitive communication.
• Project Management: strong project management skills to ensure timely and successful execution of communication initiatives and plan for what future communication tactics and strategies may look like.
• Collaboration: demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including university leaders, to align DEI communications with institutional priorities and objectives. Build relationships that are crucial to managing DEI communications effectively.

• Experience in higher education.
• DEI Knowledge: In-depth understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion concepts, issues, and best practices.
