    The North Carolina Justice Center is a progressive research and advocacy organization dedicated to expanding opportunity and protecting the rights of low-income individuals in North Carolina. For over 25 years, the NC Justice Center has been on the front lines in the courts, at the legislature, in the media, and in communities advocating for positive changes for low-income and working North Carolinians. The NC Justice Center has played a primary role in most of the state's major policy debates and successfully litigated hundreds of individual cases and class actions.

    The Education & Law Project works to improve and reform public education from pre-K to 12th grade through policy research, community outreach, and litigation. They are committed to ensuring students of color, students with disabilities, students from families with low incomes, and students that are otherwise disadvantaged have access to high-quality education.

    The Role

    The North Carolina Justice Center is seeking a full-time Communication Specialist that will work with our Education & Law Project and our core communications team to create and execute digital campaigns, manage social media accounts, write and edit external communications like newsletters and media releases, and monitor social and legacy media analytics. They will work to develop and articulate a strong message for progressive social change with a focus on strengthening the public education system in North Carolina.

    The Communications Specialist work with both our Education and Law team and our core communications team and be supervised by the Education & Law Project Director and the Director of Communications. In addition, they will work closely and collaboratively with Every Child NC coalition partners.

    · Works with the Ed. Law team, core communications staff and partners, and related professionals to help create and execute the team's communications strategy, campaign, and events.

    · Supports, participates in, and captures the work of the NC Justice Center and Every Child NC, through photography and videography, in community events, trainings, and other efforts.

    · Captures video/photos and existing Ed. Law content and uses that material to create original content.

    · Works with the Ed. Law and core communications teams to transform written materials, including our response to policy proposals and current events, into accessible, creative, timely graphic design.

    · Creates and edits external communications like newsletters and media releases.

    · Works with the Ed. Law team to create a social media plan and manage social media engagement.

    · Monitors social and legacy media analytics.

    · Develops and articulates a strong message for progressive social change with a focus on strengthening the public education system in North Carolina.

    · Demonstrates commitment to social justice and equity through communications work that is accessible for and respectful of marginalized communities.

    Benefits:

    The NC Justice Center offers skilled and committed co-workers, a competitive salary (the anticipated salary range is $47,395 - $64,119/annually DOE) and superior benefits to enhance staff quality of life including but not limited to: six weeks paid time off, paid parental leave, thirteen paid holidays, retirement plan contribution and match, FSA, HSA, medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance coverage. This position is in the Justice Center's bargaining unit, represented by the National Organization of Legal Service Workers, UAW Local 2320.

    Requirements:

    Qualifications:

    We are looking for someone with a bachelor's degree in a related field or a minimum of four years of demonstrated experience who can navigate the worlds of traditional and digital media to support social justice, equity, and inclusion. An ideal candidate will have personal experience with public education and a demonstrated commitment to advocacy for as a public education in North Carolina. They will demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills. Candidates should have experience with Canva and the Adobe Creative Suite, and understand graphic formats, layouts, and sizing. Candidates should have experience working with websites built in WordPress and Every Action or comparable CRM systems. A successful candidate will have experience copy editing and writing in AP style. A successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to improving social justice and racial equality.
