    Job Description:

    The Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in assisting the surgical team to ensure a smooth and successful operation.

    This role operates under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and reports directly to Surgical Services management.

    The focus is on supporting system wide and surgical operations initiatives and practices. Moreover, actively engaging in the safety plan for surgical operations.

    About Primary Children's Hospital


    Situated in Salt Lake City, Utah, our hospital is the sole Level I Pediatric Trauma center catering to a five-state region.

    With one of the busiest trauma programs nationwide, our facility houses a 32-bed PICU, 16-bed CICU, 28-bed Neuro Trauma Unit, and 50-bed level IV NICU.

    About the Operating Room


    We operate 16 surgical rooms with various specialty teams including ENT, Eyes, Plastics, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Cardiovascular, General, Urology, Gynecology, Transplant, and Robotics. Most surgeries take place Monday-Friday between 7AM - 5PM.

    Shifts and Scheduling

    To ensure adequate staffing in the Operating Room, we have a rotation of multiple shifts. The most common shift is 7AM - 5:30PM, with a limited number of 7AM - 7:30PM shifts. Shift times are subject to evaluation and adjustment to best serve the operational needs.

    • 7AM - 5:30PM
    • 7AM - 7:30PM
    • 7PM - 7:30AM
    • 11AM - 7:30PM
    • 11AM - 11:30PM
    After completing orientation, staff will be on call approximately 4 times within an eight-week schedule. They will also rotate through alternate shifts as necessary, typically 4 times within an eight-week period. Holiday schedules are distributed among team members.

    The operating room is closed for planned cases on major holidays; however, in-house and on-call teams are available for emergencies.

    The Surgical Technologist has a defined pathway for progression to Surgical Technologist levels II or III.

    Job Essentials


    • Ensures sterilization criteria are met for the room and surgical tools.
    • Maintains a sterile environment and ensures safety.
    • Recognizes and implements protocols for sharps and fire safety.
    • Prepares the room and instruments for surgery, and may assist with sterile processing.
    • Supports surgical staff during procedures within their scope of practice.
    • After procedures, cleans the room and readies it for the next one.
    • Identifies and responds to emergency situations effectively and decisively.

    • Surgical Tech I

    Starting Rate:
    $22.80 or higher based on experience


    • Surgical Tech II

    Starting Rate:
    $25.08 or higher, depending on experience


    • Surgical Tech III

    Starting Rate:
    $27.60 or higher based on experience

    • Shift Details: Variable hours, schedule will be discussed in interview.
    This vacancy could be filled as a Surgical Tech II or Surgical Tech III depending on experience and qualifications.

    Minimum Qualifications


    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers.
    • Completion of an accredited Operating Room Technician program (ORT)
    • Or completed a non-accredited surgical tech program within the last six months, but not currently eligible to sit for Tech in Surgery exam (NCCT)
    • Or two years of experience as a scrub tech in a hospital or military surgical services within the last three years.
    • Or equivalent international training with legal authorization to work in the United States.
    Preferred Qualifications


    • Active National Certification as an OR Tech in Surgery or Certified Surgical Technologist. Certification expected within the specified timeframe.
    • Certification is mandatory post-hiring with the following conditions:
    • Surgical Technologists from accredited programs must certify within one year of being hired (either NBSTSA or NCCT certification can be used).
    • Surgical Technologists from non-accredited programs or those with on-the-job or military training should aim to certify as soon as possible. This timeframe may exceed one year to fulfill the worked hours (>6000) and case tracking requirements per NCCT. Managers will meet with new hires to plan certification, estimate certification window, and monitor progress.

    Physical Requirements:


    Continuous need for visual and reading acuity, manipulating complex equipment and instruments, and patient care interactions.

    * and -Regular communication with care providers, patients, and visitors requiring rapid, accurate verbal exchange of information, particularly in emergencies.

    * and -Manual dexterity for precise equipment handling and computer tasks, as well as the ability to lift and transfer patients and heavy equipment with a full range of motion.

    * and -Walking, assisting with patient movement, and handling supplies and equipment of various weights. Navigating through busy rooms is typical.

    * and -Ability to stand for extended periods in protective gear.
