    Procedure Room Assistant Description

    GENERALSUMMARY/OVERVIEWSTATEMENT:

    Shift: 40hr rotation

    Procedure Room Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of PCA. The PRA is responsible for transporting patients, cleaning procedure rooms, maintaining acleanenvironment, moving equipment, delivery ofspecimens, and other duties as assigned. The PRA functionsas a member of the PeriproceduralNursing Team who has specific knowledge, skills and training to work in a procedural setting.

    PRINCIPLEDUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITES:

  • Promotes a philosophy of patient/familyfocused care through cordial greeting andinteractions withpatient,families and hospital personnel
  • Provideshospital/unitorientationinformationforguest,patientsandfamilies
  • Demonstrates anawareness ofhospital systems and procedures, location ofalldepartments, procedure areas and other patient services. Refers patients, families and others to appropriate resources
  • Independentlytransportsandassistsinthetransferofpatientsofallagegroup,adolescencethroughgeriatric
  • Properlyidentifiespatientsutilizing2approvedidentifiers
  • Ensuressafetyandsupportmeasuresinpatienttransfer(i.e.bedrailsraised,patientcoveredwithblanketandwarm)
  • Isawareofspecialprecautionsin transferringpatientswithprecautions
  • Isawareofproperbodymechanicswhen assistinginpatienttransferandlifting ofheavyobjects
  • CleanRooms(procedurerooms,bays,set-upareas,autoclaveareas,scrubsinkareas)
  • Removesuction containersandequipment,laundrybags,trashbags
  • Washfurnitureandmakeupbeds
  • ,equipment,etc.)
  • Clean floors
  • Exchangesfullbiohazardousneedle/medicationwaste/chemotherapy/ sealedsourcesofradiationand radioisotopes.)
  • Anticipates and isattentive toprogress of procedural schedules, has supplies ready for immediate usein order tomeettight deadlines of following cases
  • Keepthecorridorscleanandfreeoftrashanddebris
  • Assist in retrieval, moving, set-up and return of specialized equipment andinstrumentation,(i.e.,fracture table preparation, ICU beds, foot pedals, intact electrical cords; anesthesia carts etc.)
  • Delivery ofspecimenstolabs(i.e.microbiology,cytology,pathology,etc.)
  • Collectandlogspecimensfromrefrigerators
  • Retrieving,deliveryandreturnofbloodproducts
  • Utilizespatientidentifierswhenretrievingbloodproducts
  • Ensuresproperhandoffof productstoprocedural staff
  • Creates stock lists,obtainandstock procedure room scrub sink, set-up rooms,work stations and autoclave areas (i.e.facemasks, soap, paper work, etc.)
  • Distributelinen
  • Carryoutdutiesthatare"servicespecific"(i.e.PACU,Amigo,lnterventionalRadiologyetc.)
  • Reporting brokenstretchers,bedsequipmentetc.
  • Fillingoutequipmentrepairsheetandtakingbrokenstretchersoutofcirculation.
  • Carryoutstandarddutieswhicharewithinscope(i.e.holdlimbs,assistinpositioningpatients)
  • The staffmember mustbeable to demonstrate theknowledge and skills necessary toprovide care appropriate tothe age of the patients (all age groups) served in the Perioperative area and Operating Rooms
  • Performspre procedure prep (i.e.washsite andhairclipping)

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduateorequivalent
  • Abletoread,understandandwriteEnglish
  • SuccessfulcompletionofHospital Orientation
  • Successful completion of Departmental Orientation andTraining

    • SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Mustbeabletolift40lbs.Independently
  • Mustbeable topushstretcherindependentlywithpatientweighingupto2501bs
  • Mustbeable tocomprehendwrittendirections formixingcleaningsuppliesandorderingsupplies
  • Must beawareofproperbodymechanicswhenassistinginpatienttransferandliftingofheavyobjects
  • Mustpossessinterpersonalskillssufficienttointeracteffectivelywithotherhealthcare members
  • Must constantly be alert andattentive toprogress ofO.R. schedule to meettight deadlines offollowing cases

    • WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Work isperformed ina sterile and substerile environment requiring wearing surgical scrub attire which includes, butisnot limitedtoscrubs,hat,mask, gloves,booties,gownand goggles.Theremaybetimeswhenthe temperatureis required to be very warm (<80 degrees) for hours at a time. Work is undergroundwith no windows or exposureto light. There are areas withsome physical discomfortsdue tounpleasant odors andhighnoise level. Handling ofbodyfluids; sharps and tissue occurs frequently.Therefore strict adherence to precautions is mandatory and carelessnesscould result in exposure and/or injury. The environment is fast-paced, high stressed, demanding and intense atmosphere.
