    Norfolk State University (NSU) is a Historically Black University located in the city of Norfolk, Virginia.

    The NSU campus enrollment is approximately 6,000 students, and the campus has a rich tradition of undergraduate teaching and research.

    The College of Science, Engineering and Technology in NSU now features a growing focus on emerging areas in science and technology, and the Engineering department was established in 2002 as a separate program.

    Today, the Engineering department offers a BS and MS degree, and the Engineering department faculty supports the PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering program.

    Center Description


    The PREM for functional nanomaterials center is to develop advanced fabrication techniques and capabilities at NSU collaborating with advanced characterization capabilities at NSF Science and Technology Center on Real-Time Functional Imaging (STROBE) center to better understand functional nanomaterials.

    The PREM for functional nanomaterials research focuses on understanding and utilizing the interplay of atomic- and nanoscale structure with functionality in quantum materials.

    Job Description


    An opportunity has arisen to employ a Post Doctoral Research Associate, through the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project of the PREM for functional nanomaterials.

    The appointment is available from the 1st of April 2024 and for a period of 6 months.


    The successful candidate will join a cohesive research group in PREM project and be responsible for supervision of student research projects in quantum materials.

    Key responsibilities of the position are below.


    • Support in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.
    • Prepare project reports, scientific papers and technical presentations on the results of the research.
    • Design and implementation of the software and hardware module for data acquisition.
    • Modelling and data analysis using Mathcad, Crystal Maker, and other software.
    • Quantitative and qualitative analysis of measured data.
    • Develop programs and modify existing software to support the development of the project.

    Minimum Qualifications


    The candidate must have or will receive a PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering, or a very closely related field by September 2024.

    Applicant must demonstrate record of accomplishment of researching, scholarly activity and mentoring in the disciplines listed above.

    Applicant should be able to communicate with a diverse student-body audience, both verbally and in writing, with emphasis applied to a commitment to diversity.

    The successful applicant should be strongly motivated, have the capability to work independently as well as in collaboration with members of the research team.
