Haylay Tsegab

I am a petroleum geoscientist with over 20 years of multidisciplinary experience across industry, academia, and applied research. My career began in Ethiopia as a mining and exploration geologist, where I led diamond drilling operations, grade control, and geological mapping for gold and industrial minerals. I later transitioned into academia, serving as a lecturer and senior researcher at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Malaysia, where I currently lead the Southeast Asia Clastic and Carbonate Research Laboratory (SEACARL). My expertise includes carbonate sedimentology, petroleum geochemistry, stratigraphy, reservoir characterization, and basin analysis. I have coordinated and contributed to numerous industry-funded and international projects, including CO₂ sequestration, unconventional resource evaluation, and karst reservoir mapping. I have supervised over 20 postgraduate research projects and examined dozens of MSc and PhD theses. I am certified in data science, drone piloting, and professional training, and proficient in a wide range of geoscience software, including Petrel, Geolog, Fracaflow, and Python. My work is widely published, with over 50 peer-reviewed articles, and I actively participate in global professional societies such as AAPG, IAS, and SPE.
