Duties:


Major Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides general technical archeological assistance in a variety of areas related to or impacted by the archeological function, including National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 compliance, clearance, and planning and the NHPA Section 110 identification, evaluation, and management of historic properties.
  • Consults with recognized Indian Tribes under provisions of the NHPA, and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) to discuss concerns, ensure compliance, and assess impacts.
  • Assists in the development of a variety of documents (e.g., cultural resource management plans, preservation guides, historic structures reports, determinations of eligibility, etc.) by gathering data from files and reports, conducting research, evaluating available information, preparing agreements/scopes of work/technical assistance requests as needed, and preparing/reviewing draft documents.
  • Participates in archeological field surveys by walking over the landscape and searching for archeological sites, features, and artifacts.
  • Records data and prepares survey records (e.g., site maps, photographs, surface artifact analysis forms, field notes, etc.).

Minute Man National Historic Park Overview:
Located 16 miles west of Boston, Massachusetts.

The park preserves and interprets the historic structures and landscapes associated with the opening of the American Revolution that lie along the route of the battle of April 19, 1775, as well as notable literary figures.

Spanning 1,000 acres and consisting of 4 units.

Structures within the park include the North Bridge, 5.5 Battle Road Trail, 11 witness homes that were present at the time of the battle, extensive archaeological resources, and the Wayside.

The park receives about one million visitors a year.

  • You may be required to work oncall, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You will be required to complete a oneyear trial period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to one week per year. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work parttime during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Must have obtained the education described in A through C in this paragraph: A)

Bachelor or higher degree that includes 3 semester hours each in the following 5 course areas: 1) History of archaeology; 2) Archaeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; 3) Regional archaeology, archaeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4) Theory and methods of archaeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating and analytical techniques; 5) Archaeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work.
