The Institute for Agricultural Climate Protection at the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, located in Braunschweig, is seeking a temporary full-time scientific employee (m/f/d) in the field of agricultural sciences, soil sciences, geoecology, or geoinformatics, starting on October 1, 2023 until December 31, 2024.


The position is part of the Horizon Europe project AI4SoilHealth, which aims to develop a freely accessible, interactive dashboard for monitoring the current state of soil health in Europe using remote sensing data, machine learning algorithms, and expertise from soil experts.

The Thünen Institute for Agricultural Climate Protection conducts research at the intersection of agriculture and climate protection, developing and evaluating strategies for resource-efficient, climate- and environmentally-friendly agriculture and providing scientifically-based solutions and decision-making aids for policy makers.

Soils are a central focus of many of our research activities, including the European collaborative project "AI4SoilHealth".

The advertised position will play a crucial role in the harmonized assessment of soil health in the project. It is embedded in the newly established Data Science working group at the Thünen Institute for Agricultural Climate Protection.


Your responsibilities:

  • Development of indicators and thresholds for assessing soil health in Europe, with a focus on soil compaction
  • Harmonization of data from regional soil monitoring programs
  • Statistical and quantitative analysis of these indicators using harmonized soil data
