  • _Orchestral STRINGS __(violin, cello, viola, upright bass)_

_Classical, Jazz, or __Marching BAND _**_(woodwinds, brass)_

    BASIC FUNCTION:
  • Under the general supervision of an administrator, assists in the instruction and reinforcement of musical concepts and instrumentation to individuals and groups of students; performs related clerical tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


  • EDUCATION:_
  • Must have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent, AND
  • Must pass the District's Instructional Assistant examination, AND
  • Must have completed 48 units at an institution of higher learning (with some college coursework related to music); OR
  • Obtained an Associate's Degree (or higher), with some college coursework related to music
  • EXPERIENCE:_
  • Paid or verifiable volunteer experience working with children in an organized music setting.

JOB DUTIES:


  • Assists in the instruction and reinforcement of musical concepts, appreciation, theory and instrumentation to individuals and groups of students; conducts and monitors exercises, rehearsals and performances; takes attendance and maintains related records
  • Maintains and controls student behavior during class and individual group sessions; disciplines students according to established procedures
  • Participates in the coordination of student music activities and lessons; participates in student activities related to music education and rehearsals
  • Performs clerical tasks as assigned including duplicating materials, filing, typing and maintaining assigned records; reproduces, distributes and maintains music materials; prepares music packets for students
  • Communicates with teachers and maintains effective relationships with students and parents regarding student progress, behavior and related matters
  • Assists students with adjusting or preparing instruments; responds to questions from students as needed
  • Attends meetings and inservices as assigned
  • Performs related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE OF:


  • Basic music education
  • Various instruments used in a band or string ensemble
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
  • Appropriate student conduct
  • Basic record keeping techniques
  • Operation of assigned office equipment

ABILITY TO:


  • Assist in the instruction and reinforcement of musical concepts, tuning, and instrumentation to individuals and groups of students
  • Perform related clerical tasks as assigned
  • Read, understand and explain musical scores and sheet music
  • Follow the conductor's tempo and dynamics
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
  • Operate assigned office equipment
  • Attend and participate in rehearsals and performances

SUPERVISION AND WORKING CONDITIONS:


SUPERVISION:

Supervision is received from an administrator. Technical and functional direction is received from a teacher. No supervision of other staff is exercised.


WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • ENVIRONMENT:_
Classroom work environment, outside instructional spaces (e.g., football stadium, track field, auditorium, etc.). May be exposed to inclement weather conditions.

  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS:_
Dexterity of hands and fingers to play instruments or demonstrate activities. Seeing to read musical scores/parts. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects.
