    Job Description and Duties

    The Integrated Pest Control Branch (IPCB) is looking to fill two Agricultural Technician I (Seasonal) positions in Kern County, located in Shafter, California.

    Under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), the Agricultural Technician I performs tasks related to pest monitoring and trapping for the Integrated Pest Control Branch.

    Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Establish specified pink bollworm (PBW) trapping zones according to Program protocols.
    • Inspect all serviceable PBW traps daily for suspected specimens.
    • Record all PBW trap service data and maintain cotton maps.
    • Assemble delta-shaped insect sticky traps for pink bollworm detection.
    • Drive to specific cotton sites and collect cotton plants for silver leaf whitefly (SLWF).
    • Examine collected cotton leaves for SLWF.
    • Record the presence or absence of various pests (armyworm, mites, aphids, honeydew, and sooty mold).
    • Participate in boll collection and inspection activities for the cotton seed bug survey.
    • Package collected cotton bolls and suspect specimens.
    • Complete daily trapping and survey reports.
    • Record the number of trap or survey sites visited each day.

    Working Conditions

    This position primarily entails outdoor work, approximately 85% of the time. Agricultural technicians work alone in agricultural fields, inspecting traps and surveying sites weekly. Some work areas are remote with limited public services. Technicians are exposed to environmental extremes from May to October, servicing 30 to 60 traps or survey sites daily.

    Agricultural technicians navigate uneven ground, from the vehicle to trap sites at the edge of cotton fields. Suitable clothing, sunscreen, protective gloves, and sturdy footwear are recommended.

    While in the office, technicians handle administrative tasks with typical office equipment and computer programs.

    Special Requirements

    Incumbents need to maintain a valid driver's license and have some college or agricultural-related experience.
