The Division for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) provides leadership and expertise to West Chester University to advance its commitment to the principles of inclusivity, service, and academic excellence. Through programmatic and educational initiatives, collaborative partnerships, and outreach we cultivate an environment that welcomes all. The Division for DEI is comprised of four campus community centers, as well as the Office for DEI and the Frederick Douglass Institute. As part of the division,The Dowdy Multicultural Center (DMC) promotes holistic success and development of students through collaborative co-curricular experiences that promote multicultural awareness, create a sense of belonging, affirm racial and cultural identity, and empower all students to challenge systems of oppression.
Reporting to the Director, the Assistant Director assists with developing, implementing, and facilitating programs, services, and resources to promote success for multicultural students. As part of a dynamic team, this position leads efforts to increase awareness and appreciation for racial and cultural diversity; improve retention and graduation rates for multicultural students, advocacy, and improved understanding and appreciation of issues related to multiculturalism.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate effective communication, organizational, and public speaking skills; a genuine commitment to student success; and experience working with a diverse campus community of students, faculty, and staff.
Responsibilities include:
Collaborate with campus partners to develop, facilitate, and assess programs for the DMC including discussion series, cultural heritage awareness events, and leadership development programs
Support and advise the student executive board for the Multicultural Organization Advisory Board (MOAB) including planning and facilitating meetings, coordinating leadership trainings, and troubleshooting issues
Manage the reservations, use, and organization of the MOAB office space
Recruit, hire, train, and supervise graduate assistant(s) working in the DMC
Coordinate, direct, and oversee the Kente Graduation Celebration for traditionally underrepresented students, the Fall Community Festival, and the Ruby Conference on Race, Social Justice, and Civic Leadership
Assist with the coordination of DMC student staff trainings
Collaborate with campus partners to promote and encourage student participation in diversity, equity, and inclusion activities
Oversee DMC marketing and promotion including newsletters, website maintenance, and social media updates
Assist with strategic planning, reporting, and departmental assessment efforts
Create and submit reports
Serve on University committees
Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in humanities, social sciences, or related field
One year of professional experience in higher education
One year experience planning events
Experience working with student organizations
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, and Excel
Availability to work evening and weekend shifts
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling education or related field
Experience advising and supporting student organizations
Experience designing and delivering trainings and presentations
Experience planning large-scale programs
Experience with systems used in higher education including SAP/ BI, Banner, D2L, OnBase, OU Campus, Qualtrics, and 25LivePro
Experience marketing and promoting events
