    Job Summary:

    The Assistant Director of Residence Life will lead the department's efforts to create a vibrant and engaging slate of programs to develop a strong sense of belonging for the 3,000+ residential students on the Queens campus. The Assistant Director will serve as a programming leader and inter-departmental liaison for the Office of Residence Life. Focusing on night and weekend programming, the Assistant Director will coordinate the department's annual events, design programming series, and oversee the scheduling and implementation of student organizations' programming. Through coordination with campus partners this position will develop a robust schedule of events for the residential student body. The Assistant Director also oversees the Faculty In Residence Program. The position will directly supervise a Residence Director and a Graduate Assistant. This is a live-off position that serves in the central duty rotation and reports to the Director of Residence Life.

    Essential Functions:

    The Assistant Director will oversee large scale programming for the Office of Residence Life and play a vital role connecting students with programming throughout the division. The Assistant Director will develop new programs and improve and expand upon existing programs and traditions. The position requires creativity, multitasking, strong budgeting skills, expert decision making in planning, procurement, and purchasing. Experience scheduling and reserving spaces, advertising, and marketing through a variety of media is essential for this role. The successful candidate will also support the daily functions of the Office of Residence Life including but not limited to: opening, closing, occupancy management, parent and family support.

  • Work autonomously to plan, organize, and coordinate the delivery of services to approximately 3000 residential students; encourage commuter student participation in residence hall programming.
  • In coordination with the Office of Campus Activities, design and manage a semesterly calendar of events to engage residential and commuter students.
  • As the department's large scale programming leader, coordinate the development, promotion, and success of signature and large-scale programming efforts with the Residence Life team and campus partners. Signature events include, but are not limited to: Battle of the Buildings, Family Weekend, Homecoming, Stormin' Loud, End of the Semester Food Drive, Founder's Week, Midnight Runs, University Service Day, Wellness Week, Take Back The Night, and a variety of Athletics events.
  • Develop and maintain relationships as the unit's primary liaison to essential campus programming partners including: Office of Multicultural Affairs, First Year Mentoring, Student Wellness, University Career Services, Campus Activities, Campus Ministry, Campus Recreation, Athletics, Student Government, Center for Student Success, etc. to drive residential student engagement in support of strategic priorities.
  • Manage the event attendance tracking and reporting utilizing internal systems including Argos, Coursedog, Star Rez, and Banner. Oversee management and training for staff that utilize these systems.
  • Coordinate the assessment of large-scale programming initiatives by Residence Life in conjunction with the Residence Directors.
  • Implement a programming model that incorporates inclusivity, belonging, community building, academic success, and personal well-being within the residence halls, informed by an understanding of college student development.
  • Coordinate programming activities of the Faculty in Residence Program to maximize student-faculty interaction outside of the classroom.
  • Promote events with a multi-modal marketing strategy focusing on video content production in coordination with the Office of Student Communication and Web Content.
  • Design programmatic series to help students develop skills in installments.
  • Build connections with key offices on campus to support ongoing professional development, training and student-referral processes.
  • Inventory and manage programming resources to support future efforts.
  • Serve as the advisor to the Residential Student Association (RSA) and oversee the implementation of the hall councils in the residence halls.
  • Utilize and work within budget to deliver programming, including management of external and internal invoices, in compliance with university procurement, purchasing, and expense reporting procedures.
  • Serve in the central office on-call rotation to provide emergency after-hours support to the Residence Directors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Competencies:

    The ideal candidate will be a strong leader capable of building networks across the division and university. A proven record of developing close working relationships, collegial support for program success, and previous experience in residence life, event management, or campus activities is strongly desired. The individual who fills this role must be creative, flexible, detail-oriented, and timely. Strong analytical, writing, and design skills will be required to successfully engage with a diverse student population. The Assistant Director will be responsible for managing multiple budgets, asserting strong business practices, ensuring compliance with university business, marketing, and communication standards. A background in student development knowledge as well as the ability to mentor, teach, and engage, first year, transfer, graduate, law, first-generation, international, and student-staff members is critical to the success of this position. Experience with crisis management and coaching mid-level staff in emergency situations is required.

    Supervisory Responsibility:

    The Assistant Director will supervise a residence director and a graduate assistant. In their work in the on-call rotation they will help manage and respond to campus emergencies. In conjunction with the central staff they will indirectly supervise a team of Residence Directors, Resident Assistants, and student leaders in order to carry out this programmatic work which is central to the University's Strategic Plan.

    Work Environment:

    This position operates in a professional office environment and the incumbent is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc.

    Physical Demands:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; move about; sit; to carry work; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; and communicate. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs.

    Environmental Conditions:

    The work environment for this position will include classroom spaces, large event spaces, outdoor venues where noise, fumes, flashing lights, and uneven terrain may be present.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

    This position is full time with typical hours of M-F 8:30am - 4:30pm. Schedule flexibility will be required for the role and candidates must be able to accommodate night/weekend hours as needed in order to support programming objectives and the student experience.

    Travel:

    Travel is primarily local and may include visits to the other campuses from time to time.

    Required Education and Experience:

    Experience and/or background in student development, staff development, programming and community engagement

  • Master's degree in higher education, college student personnel, counseling or related field required.
  • 3 to 5 years of professional experience.
  • Strong record of innovative programming success.
  • Sound budget management experience.
  • Supervisory experience, strong organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy and/or knowledge of database/information systems extremely helpful.
  • The ability to establish relationships and collaborate with faculty and staff and relate effectively with students strongly preferred.
  • Preferred Education and Experience:

  • A combination of experience in event management, campus programming, and social media marketing.
  • Previous experience working with first-generation college students, international students, and Pell-eligible students is preferred.
  • An ability to manage multiple competing deadlines.
  • Experience with creating publicity and marketing campaigns.

    In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $65,600. St. John's University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This is a 12-month, live-off position.

    This position may be relocated to any of St. John's University's physical locations at any time.
