The Department of English invites applicants for the position of
Academic Success Advising Coordinator for its online graduate programs.

Reporting to the Director of Online programs, the Academic Success Advising Coordinator plans, organizes, and coordinates academic advising activities to promote student enrollment, retention, success, and graduation.

This position works collaboratively and collegially with the Department and services throughout the university to facilitate comprehensive student support through a range of in-person and virtual academic counseling and support strategies.

Essential Duties

  • Provides individual academic advising and regularly interacts with students in support of academic success.
  • Manages processes and activities related to admissions into the Department's online graduate programs.
  • Proactively monitors student academic performance; collaborates closely with students to address and resolve concerns, questions, or issues.
  • Identifies all academic options including, but not limited to: degrees, tutoring, counseling, career services, success coaches, extracurricular activities, study abroad program(s), research, and internships; supports and provides counsel to students in selection of options best suited to the student's goals, interests, and skills.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with faculty and staff to support academic success.
  • Coordinates academic success programs or advising policy development and implementation.
  • Works as a university agent in ensuring ongoing satisfaction for students with their program and successful progress to completion, provides follow up to ensure satisfaction with and effectiveness of services, and utilizes a variety of university data and programmatic direction to promote student academic success.
  • As required, acts as a college/department/school representative to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success; attends and/or presents at orientation or recruiting events/activities/workshops.
  • Maintains program information in multiple systems, ensuring it is correct and current.
  • Prepares detailed documents, proposals, reports, and provides analysis of data for identification of admissions, enrollment, and student success trends.
  • Adeptly uses multiple systems at the same time (such as student record databases, customer relationship management systems, degree progress tools, appointment systems).
  • Resolves complex issues and takes the lead on projects built around student support.
  • Manages escalated issues from both internal and external constituencies.
  • Establishes and maintains effective professional working relationships with leadership, faculty, and staff.
  • Possesses a clear understanding of the unit goals of the college and/or departmental processes and expectations.
  • Collaborates with leadership to provide solutions associated with specific programs or projects.
  • As required, supervise/support Academic Success Advisors in the successful execution of their duties. This may include hiring, training, mentoring and/or managing performance for direct and/or indirect reports.
  • Coordinates activities and projects within the department or college directed to the retention and success of online students.
  • Communicates information clearly and in a timely fashion, including complex procedural information, both verbally and in writing.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, professional development seminars and other student supportrelated meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Online Programs.

Minimum Qualifications


Master's degree in a related field and two (2) years or more of the following: advising or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in Academic Success Advising Coordinator retention, graduation, and academic planning; Or, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience advising online students or working with online students/programs in student recruitment/retention or other related student services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ASU academic structure and familiarity with programs such as Peoplesoft, Analytics, Dashboards, Gportal, iPOS, AppXtender, Salesforce, Microsoft Office.
  • Experience managing and prioritizing multiple tasks and deadlines, and working collaboratively in a dynamic team environment.
