Animal Keeper Care Center - County of Bergen

Department of Parks - Bergen County Zoo


Under the close supervision of an Animal Care Center official, the attendant will be responsible for cleaning and disinfecting cages, rooms, and equipment.

Supports veterinary staff with handling of animals and administration of treatments; does related work as required.

The Animal Care Center provides health and wellness care for all of the animals living at the zoo.

This is a hands-on position Be prepared to work hard in any kind of weather, and probably get a little dirty.

Good observational skills and excellent note-taking abilities are necessary. Be flexible since you may be working with different animals and have different responsibilities each week. You'll be required to learn about the natural history of all of the animals you'll be working with.

Public speaking skills are a must when interacting with zoo visitors, whether answering general questions, giving a presentation, or working with our Zoo Camp attendees.


Job Responsibilities:
(may include but not limited to)

  • General animal husbandry (feeding, cleaning, enrichment, etc.) of hospitalized animals.
  • Preparing and administering medications.
  • Observing veterinary procedures, monitoring vital signs, developing xrays, maintaining detailed records.
  • Public interaction.

Schedule:

  • Seasonal
  • May August Ability to work weekends and holidays

Hours:
between per week.


Education & Experience:

  • High School Graduate / some college preferred.

Skills and Special Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 4050lbs.
