Boiler Operator

Summary:


  • Under direction, operates and makes minor repairs to stationary steam boilers or steam generators. Fires stationary boilers used in generating power to supply steam to heating plants, turbines, and other steam powered equipment.

Sample of Job Duties:


  • Sees that water is maintained in the boiler at the required level.
  • Measures and records amounts fuel used.
  • Washes boiler and pump rooms and does other work to maintain the areas in a clean, orderly and safe condition.
  • Makes emergency repairs and does the work required to keep the machines/boilers in good operating condition.

Requirements:


  • Possess a current, valid Black Seal Boiler Operator License issued by NJ Dept. of Labor & Workforce Development.
  • Valid NJ Driver's License

Knowledge and Abilities:


  • Knowledge of the varied types of machines and equipment used in a power plant and in a high pressure heating plant, including the supplies, materials, and tools used in lubricating and cleaning machinery and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the problems, methods, and techniques used in repairing, maintaining, and installing grate units, tubes, and caps and in turbining boilers.
  • Knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of firing stationary boilers and the varied types of stokers and their operation, including the several types of safety devices and measures.
  • Knowledge of the proper levels for water in boilers to secure the maximum in safety and efficient operation.
  • Knowledge of the problems, procedures, and methods used in maintaining the fires at the proper thickness and the regulation of the drafts so as to obtain the most efficient results.
  • Knowledge of the methods, supplies, and materials used in washing and cleaning the boiler and pump rooms.
