Summary:

The Laboratory Instrument Maintenance and Repair Technician is responsible for the calibration, routine maintenance, and repair of various pieces of high-value laboratory equipment, including (but not limited to) chromatographs, spectrometers and all major analytical instrumentation.

The job requires the technician to work with little direct supervision, to adhere to site and laboratory standards for safe work, to respond to problems with instruments according to plant needs, to independently diagnose and solve problems, and to keep organized and complete records.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Understand and conform with Westlake safety standards, with safe practices as set forth in lab's Chemical Hazard Protection Plan and its Physical Hazards Protection Plan, and with written work procedures. Maintain a clean, safe work environment. Be pro-active in maintaining a safety culture consistent with the OSHA VPP elements. Report problems or issues that compromise safety to area supervision. Participate in monthly safety meetings.
  • Understand and conform with requirements necessary to protect the environment, including the proper disposal of waste materials and the minimization of air and water emissions.
  • Work a 40 hour / week (8-hr / day) shift, or other shift as may be assigned from time to time, plus overtime upon request.
  • Respond promptly to instrument malfunctions, and (as appropriate to the situation) perform repairs, assist technicians with routine repair tasks, or set up service calls with manufacturers service representatives for malfunctioning instruments. During non-scheduled hours the incumbent is expected to carry a Westlake-issued communication devise (e.g., cell phone) and be available to answer questions and respond to call-out requests on emergencies.
  • Perform periodic, routine maintenance for assigned laboratory instruments in accordance with manufacturers recommendations.
  • Perform calibrations on instruments as assigned by supervision.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records on instrument calibration, maintenance and repair.
  • Develop and use spreadsheets and databases as necessary to automate work and increase productivity.
  • Maintain adequate spare parts for instrument repair.
  • Develop and maintain trouble-shooting guides to assist lab technicians in addressing minor malfunctions.
  • Participate in the selection and procurement process for new instruments. 13. Understand and follow laboratory procedures and test methods for routine and non-routine samples.
  • Evaluate and recommend changes to help improve test procedures or other lab policies.
  • Perform other routine and non-routine tasks as may be assigned from time to time by the Laboratory Quality Control Supervisor or the Laboratory Superintendent.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A current, valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card is required.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • Bachelor's degree (preferable in science or other quantitative discipline), or high school diploma/GED and related practical laboratory experience is preferred but not required.
  • Proficient organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Clear communication skills (oral and written).
  • Proficient basic mathematics and computer software skills (especially Microsoft Excel and Access).
