Summary

The Coordinator of Tutoring and Supplemental instruction is responsible for supporting the Director of CLAS Tutoring in the operation of a full-scale peer tutoring and supplemental instruction program. The Coordinator co-leads a team that includes peer tutors and support staff in the coordination and delivery of tutoring and supplemental instruction to students, both individually and in groups. This position supports the Director in collaborating with campus partners to develop, enhance, and implement a comprehensive array of tutoring programs and services that are available to all students and that positively impact student retention and success in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Primary Duties

Support the mission, vision, and goals for CLAS Tutoring to provide equitable, inclusive, and effective tutoring services for all students. Coordinate tutoring support services that are inclusive of the needs of the diverse student population at GVSU, with specific attention directed towards closing gaps in access and success for underrepresented students. Make data-driven decisions to ensure adequate and responsible staffing for the Tutoring and Reading Center and other drop-in centers as needed to meet tutoring needs of a diverse population of students in various subject areas and disciplines. Coordinate and manage the recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, and evaluation of peer tutors. Assist the Director in promoting the Tutoring and Reading Center and Supplemental Instruction via campus partnerships and marketing campaigns. Assist the Director in assessing the effectiveness of appointment tutoring services, including conducting student surveys, usage and progress reports, and impact analyses. Support the Supplemental Instruction program and facilitators as needed. Performs other duties as required/assigned by the Director of CLAS Tutoring.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

• Earned Bachelor's degree.
• One to three (1-3) years' experience in learning needs assessment tutoring support services. An equivalent combination of education and experience that provide the required knowledge and skills will also be considered.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• A preference for collaborative approaches to problem solving.
• Willingness to work both autonomously and as a key member of a vibrant team.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across academic disciplines and areas of student support.
• Commitment to providing equitable, inclusive, and purposeful support to students from all backgrounds and academic preparation.
• A commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Access, and Belonging in the workplace and for students.
• Demonstrated skills in providing constructive and supportive supervision to a diverse staff of students, team members and support staff.
• Skilled in the use of varying types of technology such as Banner, Microsoft suite, EAB - Navigate or other tutoring software.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED:

• Earned Master's degree, preferably in a higher education field such as Student Affairs, Adult and Higher Education, Educational Leadership, or College Student Development.
• Five or more years of experience in coordinating academic assistance programs in a higher education setting.
• Demonstrated experience in training and public speaking as evidenced by coursework and/or professional career.
• Demonstrated experience in managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
• Two years of supervisory experience of student support staff.
• Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft suite, Banner, and EAB.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal office environment. Some travel may be required. May require work hours beyond the typical 40 hour work week and outside of the 8:00 - 5:00 work day.

This is considered a full-time, temporary, position with benefits. Currently funded for 2 years with the possibility of future funding and/or conversion to a full-time, regular position with benefits. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
