    Description:


Under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, to perform routine tasks related to receiving, dispensing, distributing, controlling, maintaining, compounding, manufacturing, packaging and labeling of pharmaceutical products.


The County of Santa Clara Health System includes Primary Care Pharmacies, Specialty Care Pharmacies, and Inpatient Pharmacy services across three hospitals: Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Hospital & Clinics, O'Connor Hospital, and Saint Louise Regional Hospital. Primary Care Pharmacy Services include 8 pharmacies and a discharge pharmacy located across Santa Clara County. Specialty Care pharmacy services include Public Health, Better Health, Custody, Purchasing, Oncology, Behavioral Health and Specialty Pharmacies. The Inpatient Pharmacy at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, O'Connor Hospital, and Saint Louise Regional Hospital is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to ensure continuous and comprehensive patient care to residents of Santa Clara County.

Typical Tasks:


  • Transcribes physician orders to medication profiles and assembles orders for pharmacist review;
  • Performs preliminary review of new orders to screen for duplications or other routine problems and reports same to pharmacist;
  • Fills initial drug order and refills supplies of medication to unit dose system;
  • Uses a variety of packaging machines, weighing, labeling and measuring devices to package or otherwise prepare drugs in unit dose and multidose forms;
  • Performs nondiscretionary aspects of dispensing function under pharmacists review in an outpatient pharmacy;
  • Prepares and labels sterile solutions using aseptic technique under supervision of the pharmacist;
  • Prepares labels for various pharmaceutical preparations including manufactured, prepackaged, unit dose and outpatient prescription containers;
  • Operates computer terminal for order entry and label generation;
  • Assists in preparation and maintenance of department records;
  • Assists in maintenance of inventory and stock, including ordering, distributing, receiving, unpacking, marking, pricing, controlling, and record keeping;
  • Assists in transporting pharmaceuticals, solutions, and physician orders to and from nursing areas, and other health care sites;
  • Advises immediate superior of malfunctioning equipment;
  • Observes and reports to immediate supervisor any unusual circumstances including those relating to drugs, drug requests, usage or security within the hospital;
  • Assists in maintaining the pharmacy work areas in a neat, clean, and orderly condition;
  • Performs related work as required.

Employment Standards:

Education, training, and experience, which demonstrates the possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Possession of a valid registration (or eligible for registration) as a pharmacy technician in the State of California.

Some positions may require possession of a valid California driver's license.


Knowledge of:


  • Medical terminology and abbreviations;
  • Methods and procedures involved in proper handling and storing of pharmaceutical supplies;
  • Basic pharmacology and pharmacological nomenclature;
  • State and federal pharmacy regulations as they pertain to specific assignments;
  • Aseptic technique and manipulation of sterile solutions;
  • Operation of various machines and devices utilized in a pharmacy.

Ability to:


  • Perform routine mathematical calculations;
  • Perform weighing, measuring and documentation with accuracy;
  • Operate computer terminal;
  • Communicate clearly and effectively;
  • Work cooperatively with hospital staff.
