    Description:


Under direction, to plan and supervise the maintenance and improvement of the plant life and grounds adjacent to County buildings.


Typical Tasks:


  • Supervises, trains, counsels, and effectively recommends hiring, discipline, or discharge of all assigned workers including staff, jail inmates, PSP workers, General Assistance workers, and schedules, assigns, reviews, inspects and evaluates their work;
  • Develops and maintains standards for work performance and keeps work performance and time records;
  • Attends meetings and conferences;
  • Participates in the development of specifications for County grounds maintenance and improvement projects, solicit bids, meets with contractors, sets up agreements for services, and inspects the work of contractors;
  • Inspects County grounds to assure that they are being properly maintained including the appropriate care and diagnosis of plant diseases, and the repair and function of irrigation systems;
  • Maintains records and submits reports on the use of hazardous materials;
  • Makes recommendations for the purchase of gardening equipment, plants, materials, fertilizers and pesticides;
  • Plans a maintenance program for assigned landscape, garden, and other planted areas and grounds;
  • Performs related duties and tasks as required.

Employment Standards:


Sufficient education, training and work experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks, and the attainment of the following knowledge and abilities, plus: Possession of a valid California driver's license and an acceptable driving record, which will qualify for a County driving permit.

Possession of the appropriate State of California Qualified Pesticide Applicators Certificate upon appointment.


Knowledge of:


  • Horticulture including the growing characteristics, common diseases, and environmental requirements of plants which may be utilized in this area;
  • Planting, cultivating, trimming, pruning, fertilizing, irrigation and care of trees, shrubs, flowers, lawns and other plants utilized by the County;
  • Plant diseases, soil conditions harmful to plants, and their treatment;
  • The installation and maintenance of irrigation systems, controllers, and related components including backflow devices;
  • The proper use and maintenance of power and manual tools used in grounds maintenance;
  • Proper lifting techniques and other safe work methods, and procedures;
  • Principles of employee supervision, counseling, discipline and training.

Ability to:


  • Perform the typical tasks described above which require the ability to ride and use motorized and manual tools and equipment, kneel, stoop, climb, walk, and work outdoors in extreme weather and poor air quality safely and effectively for extended periods of time;
  • Lift heavy, bulky and awkward equipment and loads of up to sixty pounds;
  • Read and understand blue prints for irrigation systems and landscapes;
  • Repair and install irrigation systems and landscapes;
  • Supervise, train, and plan the work of assigned workers and employees;
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including employees, contractors, and the public.
