About the Position


As one of the Teaching Pathway programs that CBED offers, Freedom Schools Literacy Academy (FSLA) is a 4-week summer apprenticeship program that prepares high-school and college-aged aspiring educators by way of providing literacy intervention to elementary school scholars.

Reporting to the Site Lead, the Servant Leader Apprentice (SLA) Coach serves as an on-site instructional leader by owning the professional development of SLAs and the instructional integrity of programming.

They provide individualized coaching to SLAs to ensure scholars are receiving high-quality literacy instruction and SLAs are equipped with black pedagogical understandings and instructional skills.

Through participation in FSLA, it is our aim that college students will emerge committed to entering the field of education upon graduation.

As such, the coach works to ensure this apprenticeship experience is enriching and rewarding to SLAs.

This is an in-person seasonal position from Thursday, June 20th, 2024 to Friday, August 2nd, 2024. This includes 2 weeks of training and 4 weeks of programming. SLA Coaches are required to work Monday through Friday, from 7:45am-3:45pm.


Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise a cohort of about 6 SLAs toward program outcomes
  • Colead literacy testing efforts, pre and post programming, with the support of the Site Lead & Program Manager
  • Review and give feedback on lesson plans, ensuring their quality and alignment to the curriculum
  • Conduct classroom observations of SLAs and assist in their development of instructional competencies.
  • Prepare for and lead 1:1 coaching sessions with SLAs
  • Lead highquality professional development sessions, as created by the Curriculum department
  • Develop and support strategies to tackle any instructional challenges and implement plans to address them, in collaboration with the Implementation Manager
  • Complete required data, coaching forms, and other deliverables in a timely manner to monitor and record SLA development and coaching strategy implementation
  • Attend local field trips
  • Actively participate in weekly 1:1s with Site Lead
  • Support SLAs in the intellectual, emotional, and social development of their scholars
  • Adhere to CBED's FSLA policies and procedures with fidelity
  • Other duties as required

Experience Expectations & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree with at least two (2) years of teaching experience with students of color that resulted in high student outcomes
  • At least two (2) years of experience coaching and mentoring teachers preferred
  • Experienced with Google suite and data tracking systems
  • You are comfortable in giving clear and affirming feedback and implementing feedback given. You engage in constant reflection of your worknot just want you do but how you do it as well.

  • You are committed to advocating for black children, young people, and families.
