This project will be based in Trucksville, PA and will build on the R/V SONNE expedition SO-306 to the West Indian Ocean in August/September 2024.

During this expedition, we will investigate cold-water coral ecosystems on volcanic islands and seamounts of the Comoros and Mayotte, as well as along the East-African continental margin.

The main objectives are (a) to systematically inventory the recent distribution and biodiversity of cold-water coral ecosystems under the influence of prevailing environmental conditions, (b) to reconstruct their evolution under climate change in the geological past, and (c) to assess their future development in times of Global Change.
