Thursday Thoughts: Are You Making Yourself Crazy With Your Language Choices?

Thursday Thoughts: Are You Making Yourself Crazy With Your Language Choices?

Laugier is. the hock ab-orber
that eases the blow of life

Yout BerraI just heard myself say again, "Come on, you piece of **** stupid machine. Move faster! I don't have all day. Grrrrrrrrrr."

Guess what? The computer didn't move faster. It did what it does: It moved at its own pace, not mine.

Was the computer upset that I talked loudly at it?

Doubtful.

Was I upset?

Yup. The more I railed at it, the more upset I got.

Were my dogs upset? Yup. They heard the tone of voice and cowered a little in their crate.

Oh yeah. That made me feel soooooooo good.

Why is it that we whip ourselves into a frenzy over small things that don't matter? We raise our voice, which gets hard and strident. We use words like "the worst," "the most awful," or "completely unacceptable" for issues that should barely merit our notice.

And that language just makes us even angrier!

Our animals respond with fear. Our potted plants practically droop in their pots. Clouds cover the sun.

All for what?

Over small things that have the ability to drive us nuts -- because we let them. We characterize them as the worst, the most awful, the totally unacceptable -- and our brains go haywire. Our hearts beat faster. Our blood pressure rises.

We do it to ourselves.

Let's choose a different path, shall we?

Let's choose to hear ourselves and decide to make the changes that keep us (mostly) on an even keel.

Let's check our language and make sure it isn't driving us up the proverbial wall, all for naught.

We can bring ourselves back from the cliff's edge. We can acknowledge we're a little overheated over nothing. We can decide to laugh.

As Yogi Berra reportedly said:

| help business professionals
look and sound as smart as they are

And if you need a little more -- check out this video. I promise you you'll feel much better!

Happy Thursday, everyone! Just one more day before the Friday Funday post to keep the good mood going into the weekend.

I welcome your thoughts!

Soil, soul, or sole one for the Susan 🐝 Rooks, the Grammar Goddess, perhaps? Mind you each of them could be right. Soil good for helping people to grow happier. Soul designed to make you feel happier. Sole good for ones tired feet.#9 Predicted Text while frustrating, can if not the sender, then the receiver make them smile even not laugh.
Lisa Vanderburg, thanks so much for sharing my post!

So very true Susan 🐝 Rooks, the Grammar Goddess I admit I do it all the time; rant at my domestic appliances. I'm counting my computer and assessors here as they behave in the same manner; wanton, disobedient and....kickable (yup, not a word). I need to keep reading you to break my habit of over-punctuation. Oh, and the - and ; and '....I tend to write as I think :) That needs a good 180 too!

Plus its rubbish at predicting text. When I tried to put in rubbish it tried to chose to put rubbishy. An example of everyone including computers are critics of ones humble efforts?

Perhaps you should adopt John Cleese's solution. When his car didn't function properly he took a large branch and in his own words gave it "a good thrashing" I'm not sure what is the best thing with which to thrash a computer. Perhaps Ken Brodie has some possibilities.

Sounds like your computer is a bit dated, Susan. I suggest that you update to one of the new Artificial intelligence machines, but make sure that you select one with which you are fully compatible. Please learn from my mistakes so you can avoid the AI character foibles on my new AI Mac as follows: - built in stress sensor that ensures it to slows down in direct proportion to how badly I get annoyed with it; - logs off at meal times for a byte to eat; - makes squeaking noises every time I move it's mouse; - attracts spiders so it can produce more websites; and - hates cold weather and so it regularly closes Windows.
