Things You're Doing To Your Home That Your Real Estate Agent Probably Wouldn't
When you own a home, you have free reign over what goes on and is done in and to that space. Whether it’s the way you design your house, or how you choose to renovate (DIY or professionally), you have complete control. While this is one of the key perks to owning a home if you ever plan on selling you may run into some problems. Homeowners are constantly doing things to their home that make real estate agents cringe, so here are a few things you may have done to your home that real estate agents would never do.
Over-Customizing
When you move into a home, the first thing you’re likely to do is adding a personal touch so it feels more “you”. Depending on the person, you may have a motif you follow, such as stripes or certain patterns. When adding this personal touch, it’s important to think about if this is actually your forever home, and if you want to go all out in your customization. Instead of using an animal print wallpaper in your house, get animal print furniture that you can take with you to a future home.
Mismatched Flooring
An important aspect of any house is continuity. Many homes tend to have mismatched flooring – one room might be tile, the next carpeting, the next hardwood. This causes uneven transitions from one room to the next, losing potential buyers because they may feel there’s too much work to be done in order to make the transition smoother.
Neglecting Repairs
This is a big one. Everyone chooses to neglect a repair from time to time, maybe to save money, or perhaps because it would cause too much of a disruption in your life. This can cause serious problems, and all repairs should be taken care of immediately. When a home is neglected, it looks unattractive to buyers. Repairs can get more expensive the longer you wait as well. It’s also important to avoid jerry-rigging repairs, as these can often be dangerous and costly down the road.
Ignoring Curb Appeal
While having a home with a classy interior is great, it’s also important to make sure you don’t neglect the exterior. Make sure to water and cut the grass, and plant a garden. Repair the crack in the sidewalk while you’re at it. Your front yard is the first thing buyers see when they come to see your home. You don’t want to give them a bad first impression.
