REWRITING THE FILM INDUSTRY NARRATIVE

REWRITING THE FILM INDUSTRY NARRATIVE

FILMOCRACY

In discussion with Steve Long Director of the Global Film Exhibition

Steve Long: Philip, thanks for joining me today. First off, can you break down the story and purpose behind the captivating name of Filmocracy?

Philip: Absolutely, Steve. Filmocracy was originally created to democratize the imbalance of opportunity in the film industry. Viewers are incentivized to rate and vote on films, thus quality projects are pushed to the top of the pile. Half of the revenue pool that comes into Filmocracy is also split amongst the filmmakers. As we grew, our operation expanded to include hosting film festivals/events, offering distribution opportunities, and stewarding a community of filmmakers.

Steve Long: For newcomers in filmmaking, how would you sum up Filmocracy's contribution to promoting independent cinema?

Philip: Filmocracy is a place for filmmakers to come together, collaborate, and show off their work without the gatekeeping and white-walling of the entrenched industry. Films and filmmakers are pushed to the top based on their merit.

Steve Long: Philip, as the years have rolled by, how has Filmocracy responded to the evolving trends in independent film distribution?

Philip: Every year is a new challenge. Even now with the strikes continuing, we are moving to adapt. The world post-COVID-19 has seen film festivals and private screenings go back to the physical theaters but with all the accessibility provided by the internet. The needs of filmmakers change because the needs of the viewers and the industry change. All along the way,  Filmocracy's goal has been to provide independent filmmakers with the resources and opportunities to continue in the art that they love.

Steve Long: Can you shed some light on Filmocracy's selection criteria for indie films?

Philip: Filmocracy is truly a meritocracy, we do not select films based on any qualitative metrics. We simply check the films to make sure the audio and video are true. The audience will determine the rest.

Steve Long: So, how does Filmocracy gauge the potential success or resonance of a film with its audience?

Philip: Through the ratings and analytics system, filmmakers are able to collect information about their film, which they can then share with distributors/collaborators/investors or use the information for their own purposes to improve their film.

Steve Long: And how does Filmocracy specifically assist indie filmmakers in maximizing their film's visibility?

Philip: While we are a technology platform on the surface, we are actually a very hands-on team with our partners. We are always open to collaborating on exciting projects, whether we are offering a live virtual private screening or building a metaverse for your film property or simply chatting about it in our Discord channel and social media.

Steve Long: From where you stand, what are the pressing challenges indie filmmakers face in this digital age?

Philip: Content overload is a thing, and it has never been more difficult to get someone to watch your film than ever before. Many believe the challenge is finding funding to get films made, but we believe that funding will always be there for the right projects. The real challenge is figuring out what kind of film to make that will not only engage audiences but also be a viable option for investors.

Steve Long: Any standout success stories on Filmocracy you'd like to share?

Philip: We've had many filmmakers get real representation through our film market to world stages such as Cannes and TIFF and more. The distributors/executives need the films as much as the filmmakers need the opportunity, and the Filmocracy virtual film market connects the two in an efficient and effective way.

Steve Long: What wisdom would you share with budding indie filmmakers eager to shine on platforms like yours?

Philip: If you're making a film to express yourself or your art, then leave it as art. If you're making a film to make money, then make a film that will make money.

Steve Long: Any myths about indie platforms or Filmocracy that you'd like to address?

Philip: Not sure about this one, do you have any questions or have heard any myths that maybe I can try to clear up?

Steve Long: Finally, considering the rise of digital streaming, how is Filmocracy gearing up for the future of indie film showcasing?

Philip: Our newest partnership with Hoopla will bring independent filmmakers to an institution that lends credibility and provenance, along with real revenue potential, servicing an audience that is given access through public funding.

Steve Long: Philip, thank you for the insights. It's evident that Filmocracy is reshaping the narrative for indie filmmakers, and we're excited to witness its journey.

Philip: Thanks, Steve. The journey's just as exciting for us!
